Telkom confirms authenticity of ‘ADSL blacklisting’ email

i dont get the big deal?

most isp's block you anyway when you reach your cap, telkom gives you a bit of "bonus" if you go over your limit once in a while. so whats the big deal? it should be people from ISP's other than telkom moaning that their isp's block them straight away, every month...

Is it possible that Telkom is trying to help the other ISPs ?

so much for their RELAXED capping policy - now they are moaning. Now i know why they are capping so soon lately - they are tightning their grip once again because they are not getting their way.

I'm switching to GTS.

There is no such thing - Telkom ONLY thinks of themselves, never about anybody else!. - you should now this by now, its called "Telkom Logic"

You know what, I have no sympathy for the people complaining at all..

TelkomInternet has been allowing people more bandwidth than they have paid for and people have been using as much as possible at all times...

If you are paying for 3 Gigs then anything over that can be called theft. If you have an office fridge and the company says you are allowed 4 drinks a day and you take 10 a day what do you think will happen to you?

I agree the caps are to low but that is not the point of this article.

Also this constant complaining that the 4Mb lines are now useless because you hit your cap quicker is utter garbage, if you stopped lining up all your p2p downloads your cap would be fine...

All the ISP's specifically say that their offering is not aimed at p2p applications... Sometimes people complain to much about the wrong things.

Same as the people on iBurst who are so happy that they managed to get 20gigs down in one month on a 3G package... If I owned the company I would throw you off as well....

so why did they deny it yesterday? I guess this is more of Papi's costomer centric policy?

Let's see.

If I under use then my unused does not carry across to the next month.

If I reach my cap, for which I have paid, then this is carried across to the next month and i am treated differently on some arbitrary basis?

Surely it is time that Telkom stops operating in a vague arbitrary fashion, seemingly by the whim of some unknown, unspecified person or persons.

A professionally run organisation would clearly publish the terms and conditions under which it operates. The current Telkom modus operandi seems to be wide open to various forms of corruption. If I were to bribe the right person would I be excluded from the blacklist?

Gavin Mannion - Bulldust - Telkom can also cap on the dot at 3gb, but they chose a relaxed capping policy, and not cap their clients - they did this to draw customers away from other isp's and yes, it worked. They have the ability to cap at 3gb, and it is entirely their job to monitor and do this - why must i spend my life watching every bite going in and out of my pc - its like having to listen to someone talking thru a movie you're trying to watch.

no its called crappy systems if cell phone guys know to stop you when your credit gets to 0.00 then why doesnt telkom do the same when your cap gets to 3 gig.

Mjay and LabAnimal,

Your arguments don't stand up... Do you want to be capped at 3 gigs?

You can ask Telkom to send you daily emails of your bandwidth usage as well...

I bet that none of the people who received this 'nasty' email where slightly over their cap, I can almost guarantee that they had used more than double their allocated cap.... Just browse the forum a bit and see the people boasting about how much bandwidth they managed to get last month... What do you really expect?

I'm sure Telkom are going to be happy to use your comments to reinforce the fact that everyone wants to be hard capped....

SilverSurfer: No it's just the fact that I can see basic logic even from Telkom sometimes....

I hate Telkom as well, which is why I use iBurst :D... But in this regard I think they are right.

Could this be a backlash because they now have to make local uncapped again ? Seeing as though local should already be uncapped , how can they possibly blacklist you to a free (local ) enviroment ? Yes they could send you an email that says you have reached your 3 gig cap and you intl useage is blocked , you have to buy more more ect ect , but how can they go against ICASA and say that for the rest of the month no more interenet when local is suppose to be uncapped ? Does not make sense to me .

Honestly, who cares? If and when they blacklist me, I'll move to another ISP.

Gavin, you seem to be a nice charitable chap with your time. If I pay these tirants R249 for an account, I EXPECT them, as part of the service, to manage the bandwidth (as they are the ones who want to control it in the first place). If they can't do that, I am not going to do it for them! I have better things to do.

You say theft, I say using a service that would rightly be available if we were not stuck in such a diabolical monopolistic telecoms environment.

Also, as long as Telkom abuse their current situation, anything they do IS NOT RIGHT, and anyone who thinks so is probably trying to substantiate their own current rubbish broadband choice!

Firstly, the email only includes usage up to 3 days ago, so you have no idea as to the actual usage atributed to you.

@Kabal - You are right. This change is because telkom have to go back to providing the service for which many of us signed up 3 years ago, that of local uncapped.

It's ridiculous Telkom threatening to blacklist when this is a capped product! They should just cap people if they go over the limit/soft threshold and be done with it. No need for threats of being banned from using any Telkom product in the future.

Well said Kabal.

Telkom publishes their "bandwidth pooling" policy. Despite the fact that Telkom Internet as a so-called independent ISP must be buying the same product from Telkom/Saix as the others, it is the only one that *can* use this policy - other ISP's have no choice but to hard-cap.

Telkom changes their product delivery term at a whim, but without changing their terms of service. That is just plain illegal.

Telkom refuses to change their product delivery to comply with regulation. Hard caps are illegal according to the regulations, but Telkom continues to sell only hard capped accounts to ISP's, they have no choice but to break the law. Though I'd like to see the ISP's take some action around that... but Telkom has them by the balls, having made local surfing a >R30/Gb money spinner.

The same goes for session resets.

I for one am pissed off that because of the effective monopoly that Telkom enjoys, they behave like a law unto themselves knowing that people have no real option but to put up with it.

Anyway... what exactly does black-listing entail... are you going to find yourself on a even more heavily shaped or throughput throttled service next month?

Fact of the matter is that they chose this relaxed policy to draw customers away from other ISP, this is some what of a dirty trick that none of the other ISP's can do. Telkom play dirty! They chose to do this and now they'll have to live with it.

They are ripping everyone off and have been for a very long time, they make dumb decisions to get a quick buck at the expense of the consumer. Their accounts are more expensive than most of the other ISP's, so they have to play dirty to get any customers. Now that they have no other choice and will lose money in any decision they make, they start **** like this. They can cap on 3gb without a problem, but they'll lose customers, or they can go on with relaxed capping and will pay more for the bandwidth that the users use. They don't listen to ICASA rullings cause it doesn't suite them.

Does this sound like company that we should all be caring about?

I say go on abusing THEIR self made relaxed policy and if they blacklist you then wtf cares. Go over to someone who will charge you less. They have been ripping us off for long enough, now it's our turn.

btw: I don't use/abuse Telkoms internet accounts and will never because of **** like this. I also would not normally be in favour of such abuse/use of accounts, but Telkom is a special case.

since local should be uncapped again - i can see the 30gig accounts making a return thru proxies of sorts - so lets see what happens.

3gb is enough for anyone - what a load

I think that its clear that the "3gb is enough for anyone" bandwidth use myth is right up there with 640k being more RAM than anyone ever need.

Just have a look at what a couple of hours of streaming radio or video chat or skype or online file backup will do to your cap.

Its a load of the brown steaming stuff to claim that you need to p2p to blow 3gb use.

Any normal user can do it particularly if they use "3g applications" like streaming radio/video/voip etc.
