Cell C forced to end WiMax trials

ICASA protecting the interest of its master I see.

How can this be legal? Only allowing fixed line operators WiMax licenses, something is definitely wrong here ;) ;) *nudge nudge*. What was all that PR crud about competition being the only solution....blah blah.

Looks like the self-enrichment folks are protecting their monopolies. And since when is Sentech a fixed line operator?

This move by ICASA is indicative they won't allow competition into the market. After all, why do we need competition when "there's no proof that ADSL pricing is too high"?! :rolleyes:

you guys can wake me when we have a less corrupt goverment. You cant go against these guys. This shows you ICASA isnt actually weak. They can act if they want to.

If anyone does manage to fight them with effect let us know, otherwise I am just gonna enjoy the little internet access I have.

Ok, maybe I'm misinterpretting what is stated in this news article - correct me if I'm wrong.

My interpretation:

  1. CellC has been testing pre-WiMax using 3.5GHz [test spectrum licence],
  2. however ICASA in all its wisdom & continuing assistance given to the DoC in order to protect Telkodemonopolies HQ [in Pretoria|Tshwane] against the many consumer Tsunamis that threaten to throw Papi out of the saddle on the beast, as well as protect various self-enrichment members of guavamint, decided to discontinue CellC's 3.5GHz WiMax test licence and give the spectrum to Telkodemonopolies & NeOTel and Sentech to use for WiMax [whether for testing or production is unclear],
  3. and in any case CellC doesn't have the 802.16e equipment to continue with its testing,
  4. but CellC is confident that it can convince ICASA to let CellC use the [allocated to iBurst?] 2.6GHz spectrum to test WiMax again...

CellC had no chance of competing without the equipment to even test with - unless ICASA told the customs officials not to let the non-existent 802.16e equipment into SA...

As a cellular technology based provider, why are they not pursuing the 3G->HSDPA->HSUPA->etc. path anyway??? Bit of split personality to me.

Maybe they were thinking of creating an fully fledged IP-based comms network, with fixed wireless VOIP phones for the home, VOIP on your cellphone, only selling data and charging (insane prices probably) interconnection fees.

You mean you think it isn't? I stands for Independent.

ICASA is totally independent, apart from having its delegates appointed by the the Minister of DOC via public forums which are overuled, being funded from the State fiscus, having it's management appointed by said minister.

That ICASA effectively controls very large sums of ANC related and Government income obviously does not effect any decision taken by them. And why should it?

The fact that ICASA is the regulator who implements regulations and when convenient ceases to apply regulation should not be a worrying concern. To those who are its masters.

What amazes me is that Cell C, a company with the capacity - doesn't go after the regulator in the courts for everything they keep complaining about
