picked up a cool little gadget the other day, which I'd been aware of generally - but never got around to getting or looking at before.
Lacie Silverscreen:

To do the rough exchange rate, it cost the equiv of around R1300 - altho I'd imagine the price when/if it reaches SA would be something ridiculous..

Basically its a tiny external hard drive which has audio/video out ports - you dump your multimedia files onto it via USB - then plug it into your TV (or vid projector) and sit and watch your movies like a normal person, well away from the PC. Little remote control comes with it, to navigate around your files.

Had to initially return the first one I got, coz the biatch was switching on and off by itself - but the replacement works mostly like a dream. The thing is tiny, fits easily into pocket for casual travelling around with 80 gigs of TV & movies stashed, ready to plug into any TV for playback..

Overall thing is to try get to the point of eliminating the piles of CD's and DVD's..
Next step is I'm eyeing another multimedia hard drive enclosure, the Muvix:
http://www.bigpicturebigsound.com/mvix-mv-4000u.shtml
main reason for grabbing one of these - is that you can fit any standard drive into it - so if you have a 400 gig drive, thats 400 gigs of nicely portable and playable files without any fuss..
so instead of just 'an enclosure' - its a onestop media center+enclosure..
and the slightly more pricey one, comes with FM transmitter, so that you can travel around in car and listen to sound files, then go into where ever, and plug into a TV and play your movies as well - with one little gadget. Yummy :)

There are some advantages to being in the US - like the cheapo electronics - as well as the fact that most purchases online, tend to take between 2 -4 days max.

Just thought I'd point the movie fans, towards these gadgets - I'm not sure if they or equivalents are around in SA yet, but they're a great streamliner for the watching of movies/TV stuff, without needing the blank cd/dvd or divx-enabled dvd player at all..

MviX now avalable in South Africa

MviX Multimedia Players now avalable in South Africa at lower prices than online USA. Check out at http://www.mvix.co.za Fantastic product!!

I've also made the transition from writing stuff to dvd all the time. I am just buying more drives. Will build file servers in my study as the need to pack in more drives becomes evident. Got 2 dedicated machines already, one gaming desktop and the laptop for mobility. That is 4 computers in total. I want more! :D

My one box is hooked up to a wireless av sender with a receiver in the livingroom. I use the laptop with RealVNC to control the content I am watching on my TV. That includes listening to music.

My Divx DVD player's got a USB port so just going to get an external hard drive enclosure for an old 200 gig drive I've got and plug that in there. :)

Are there any multimedia players that lay flat like a stand alone dvd player, I need one to fit into my entertainment unit which has shelves. All these mention in these forums are upright multimedia players.Any suggestions? Thanx & Regards

Hi,

I like the MviX idea, but it would be nice if it had a screen of it's own, for those times when there is no TV around, like on the long road. But does anyone know of some good portable video players that plays a good range of formats, that has a good memory or is upgradable?

Thanks.

Just a bit of a warning. Stay away from Lacie products. I bought a Lacie Big Disk Extreme 500GB last year and the thing died on me within 2 days of basic
usage. It took the local agent 3 weeks to get my drive sorted out afterwards,
while Lacie France (English website) would not even reply to my emails.
