The Holding company of Multichoice and Media 24 have launched new share schemes - but under the following clause - Blacks only NO whites - Not only can't whites buy shares - If you are black and get an offer from a white buyer, you can't sell your shares or give them to a white friend. Oh, they try and dress it up as a BEE scheme, but its pure racism, imagine the outcry if they had a share scheme for whites only.
The surpervisor was too scared to give me her name - but why don't you give them a call on 0860116226, maybe ask them how they check if you are white - do they do the apartheid comb test - but this time if the comb runs through your hair then you are to white and you can't buy shares?
Very strange though that my money is fine every month for the debit order - but what next - black only seats at multichoice offices.
Don't try and hide racism as BEE - this country has been through this - what next multichoice? DSTV dual decoders for blacks only? how about a discount rate for Blacks - lets seperate the country again - it didn't work so well the first time, but why not try agani:mad:  ?

I hear u. But get over it and buy foreign shares.... The rewards are alot greater than you'll ever manage in SA !

Does anyone know if this would pass the constitutional test or not?

It is racism.

Period.

There is no excuse. It is white business folks who want favour in government. It doesn't make it any less racist or discriminatory. The sad truth is however, that it won't help the poor. How many shares can a poor man buy anyway? 2 or three? What dividend is that? R5 a year? Woopeeee!

It is par for the course in racist south africa. Thought the whole idea of the new south africa was to do away with racial classifications.

As a minority in this country you just have to grin and bear it or pack your bags and go to a country where you are an equal citizen no matter your skin color or what your parents did.

Hmm...

SA Constitution said:
Equality

9. (1) Everyone is equal before the law and has the right to equal protection and benefit of the law.

(2) Equality includes the full and equal enjoyment of all rights and freedoms. To promote the achievement of equality, legislative and other measures designed to protect or advance persons, or categories of persons, disadvantaged by unfair discrimination may be taken.

(3) The state may not unfairly discriminate directly or indirectly against anyone on one or more grounds, including race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, language and birth.

(4) No person may unfairly discriminate directly or indirectly against anyone on one or more grounds in terms of subsection (3). National legislation must be enacted to prevent or prohibit unfair discrimination.

(5) Discrimination on one or more of the grounds listed in subsection (3) is unfair unless it is established that the discrimination is fair.

I think (2) is the relevant section here - "redressing imbalances of the past" and all that. (5) I'd describe as a bit of a WTF though... unfair unless deemed fair? By whom? How?

Yes it will.

In the preamble of the constitution it says: "correcting the wrongs of the past" or something to that effect.

The ANC is using this for everything.

BEE. AA and call it what you like, it stays racism.

Multichoice is not the only one. Their holding group Media 24 has got their "blacks only - no whites". So is Nedbank.

Why are the shareholding in Telkom such a secret? You get nothing for the correct answer. You will be stupid if you don't know.

But my family and I were poor and unable to afford shares prior to 1994. And, being english and all, we were discriminated against by the afrikaner government. :D Or am I whining for nought?:(

lol:D

Just wondering

The thing is that Multichoice is likely to face some serious competition at some point [e.g. Triple Play services], and I seriously doubt that Multichoice is ever going to give good returns to shareholders, of course I could wrong - Multichoice could turn out to be South Africa's Google-type-success story...

Anyways ask yourself: Q: Why is Multichoice selling shares? A: Multichoice is low on cash and needs some gullable investors to float the boat again.

Interesting. Could there be a link between losing open time and making a good impression on the masters.

This is UNACCEPTABLE! An offer open to Blacks, Indians and Coloureds only? Unacceptable to discriminate by race like that.

I just phoned and asked how they define coloured people. She couldn't answer so put me through to a white guy. The guy was at a loss for words. So I said, if my great grandfather was black am I defined as coloured. He was at a loss, just laughed, said he is white too and he feels the same way.

I don't want their shares but this is just so wrong.

Guess they just want us to know how it feels...

They must always remember they are no better than us. Always trying to act righteous and justified. How is this righteous and justified? This just proves they are no better than Verwoed.

Well this isnt just Multi-Choice, its also Media24, who own them. And Media24 definitely aren't in any sort of financial trouble..

or they shouldnt be, they own pretty much everything..

But my mother has shares in Naspers/Media24, those were original shares that my grandfather bought when they started up, to help them get off their feet. Now the same people cant even buy their shares when they started the company off in the first place..

Anyone want to join me in mass protest against Multichoice by cancelling our subs all together. Will only sting if theres a whole lot of peeps that do it simultaneously and make it know why.

I closed all Nedbank accounts when they announced their blacks only share offer. Im more than prepared to do the same to Multichoice.

Previously disadvantage race groups are being empowered by big corporations because of the past. They do have the right to shares they were denied in previous years by white owned companies which they were discriminated against.

duh! Nobody is denying them the right. The problem is them denying whites and other races the right! It is exactly what got us here in the first place.

Ouch, that hurt Nedbank
Feel free to cancel your Multichoice subscription, no one's stopping you bud

it will be interesting to see what the new mixed race children are clasified as also if you are black and adopted into a white family surely you can't be seen as black anymore as you were brought up by parents who because they are white got all the benefits of apartheid...
