Kubuntu Edgy & Beryl = Awesome Desktop!

Hey all,
I'm currently writing this from my seriously pimped, massively functional Kubuntu/Beryl setup :)

The linux geeks might be able to go into more detail, but basically it is a cool effects thing that runs using XGL, which is a window manager.

The results are absolutely awesome! Transparent windows at the scroll of a mouse, virtual desktops that can be scrolled between and selected from a cube ( http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=274650730&size=o ) wiggly windows, window fade effects, and a whole lot more.

Windows Vista can eat its' heart out!
If you like the look of it, and would like to try it out for yourself, give me a shout and I'll help you get it installed.

Hmm...Linux finally gets technology from 2000 :-)
Last time I used XGL, it was seriously unstable and was very rough around the edges. Has this changed?

PS : XGL isn't a window manger, it is an X Server. Beryl and Compiz are the two main window mangers for it.
Question, has metacity finally got it's XGL extensions working. They have been half done for the last 2 years

It is a bit unstable now and then, but haven't noticed anything too bad. No idea about metacity extensions :(.

Either way, this is one way to make your friends go "ooohhhh!"
 
Looking at the video, it is still a UI nightmare. Overuse of transparency, visual effects that dont provide UI clues, etc
Show you friends OSX. Much mroe impressive

KDE with XGL/compiz seriously owns. I have been running it for a couple of months now and it is pretty stable. Any problems are solved in a second by restarting compiz.

I am running it on Dapper Drake (dont have the bw to download edgy).

When running it on gnome windows manager it looks dull by looking at those screenshots

When you cube your desktop, video plays flawlesly, and sound only cuts out when you move focus to another desktop.
Its really really awsome. You can make anything transparent. It totally kills MacOSX in just about every area. Performance, functionality and features.

If you don't mind waiting a couple of weeks, you can order a copy of the CDs from ubuntu.com.

I must say, I've always been a fan of Fedora, but I convinced myself to check out ubuntu - I'm very very impressed.
 
Running Fedora Core 6 ATM... very nice, SELinux etc

*shouts* I had a couple of chaps at a LAN last night all going "ooooooh" to my desktop so I would like to hand out a version for them. I only have the 6.01 ISO of Dapper Drake, I would prefer to give these chaps the 6.10 version as it comes with all the niceness prebuilt and you dont have to fight with one of those HOW-To`s on ubuntuforums.org
 
I tried installing xgl and so on when I was running Dapper on my Dell Latitude D505 - didn't work ...

Videos always look awesome though :)
 
I'm not a fan of Linux(Fedore Core 4 was nothing less than a mission to get working the way I wanted and I ended up recompiling the kernel and everything, my lord what a mission but I learned a lot about Linux at least) but somehow seeing these screen shots and also hearing all the hype surrounding Ubuntu I've decided to give it another try. Lucky me we have a Freedom Toaster nearby :D

The only game I play from time to time is Counterstrike Source on-line.
Any chances of putting up a few links on how to accomplish this using Kubuntu Edgy Eft.

ummm yes bf 2 plz

all these linux okes go on about linux this linux that

but in the end windows kick anything linux has to offer


so until you can show me a link to this with working games ast good frames rates without having to buy 40-50 dolla software then i will say wow

because if i have to pay 40 dolla for software to play games i might as well buy windows
 
Killadoob: May I ask what your experiance with linux is? You wouldn't knock something you know nothing about, would you?

nickste i know a little bit about linux and i know transgaming charge you like 5 dolla a month to use their software or was it 49.95 dolla

so its not free if its costing you 350 to buy the software

i also read on another forum that most ppl cant get games to work

cedega is dodgy where as windows is not and your frames ps is great

all i know is that until linux can handle games its worthless

windows does everything i need it to and i dont have to seek a manual everytime i have a problem

and alot of ppl have windows for free :)
