Hi,

Can somebody please tell me what the upload speeds are on MTN with HSDPA are. I have been told by an MTN technitian that the maximum MTN uplink/upload speed is 64kbps and not higher.

I was under the impression that true HSDPA upload speeds are about 5 times that. Has anybody here done a (upload) speed test on
http://www.speedtest.net/
or
http://www.sentech.co.za/speedtest/display_speed.php

and received higher (than 54 or 64kbps) upload speeds?

http://www.mtn.co.za/PortalContentFiles/sens/F@stLink E620 Product Info v 1 0.doc.pdf
See this document, bottom of page 7... I have quoted this extract below. This leads me to beleive MTN offers 256k upload speeds and now im told otherwise...??? A case of false advertising or incorrect information???

"What transfer speeds can I expect from HSDPA?
The maximum downlink speed for MTN's HSDPA, though theoretically 1.8Mbps, will in
reality peak at speeds of 1.3 to 1.4Mbps. This is nearly 5 times faster than GPRS!
The average downlink speed will be between 800 and 900kbps, typical for most HSDPA
networks around the world.
Average uplink speeds of around 256kbps, makes HSDPA a considerable improvement to
the current 64kpbs on the 3G network.
What affects the transfer speeds on the HSDPA network?
Data speeds experienced by users will be dependant on the following factors:
• capability of the network in the particular area – whether it is GPRS, EDGE, 3G or
HSDPA enabled
• terminal – whether the handset supports the particular technology
• distance from the tower – which determines the strength of the radio signal
• number of concurrent users – the more users, the slower the service"

Hi,

Good day

HSDPA is on the downlink. "High speed downlink packet access". Uplink on 3G is generally 64K, although with video streaming on a circuit switched call, it can go up to 384K. The HSDPA speeds are currently limited by hardware to 1.8Mb/s This is downlink only. There will soon be another product released called HSUPA, whereby the uplink will also be able to do 1.8Mb/s. This will require a new data card though.

I didn't believe that upload speeds were only 64kbps, as I consistently get >100kbps on EDGE, but a quick Google confirms that EDGE does indeed have more upload bandwidth than 3G.

Vodacom HSDPA customers are experiencing uploads speeds of 350kbps which is in excess of EDGE downloads speed  Why does EDGE have more upload bandwith?

MTN HSDPA - not in accordance with MTN marketing material

The user manual for HSDPA and the E620 at

http://www.mtn.co.za/PortalContentFiles/sens/F@stLink E620 Product Info v 1 0.doc.pdf

states on page 7 that upload speeds with HSDPA will be up to 256 kb/s. Now I have never tested an upload speed with MTN HSDPA faster than 64 kb/s and I recall a previous thread where MTN DD says that that was normal. Where is my upload speed needed for MTN illegal Skype Video?

Okay,

Here goes we had to switch a section of the upload off in order to fix a problem we had some time ago I'll check when it's due to be fixed and I"ll advise ASAP

Where is the 256 kb MTN HSDPA upload?

Still only 64 kb

Dont worry DD me too... I use ftp and html to upload onto my server and I get a max of 8KB/s or 64kb/s.

Maybe it will improve now that I finally got my Yagi (greatly thanx to you) today...lol

Kewl no worries

I'll check with network and see if they are aware of any problems with upload

Shouldn’t you get a theoretical 384kbps on the uplink with Hsdpa ?

Still only 64 kb

Could it be that your using Torrents ?

If that's the case it depends on the amount of seeds and file health. I connect @ HSDPA and some Torrents only let me DL @ 1 - 6 Kbs

That might be your case.

Also check your phone's specs. Some phones have 4 ports... 3 DL - 1UL or 2DL - 2UL
that could also affect your UL speed

I'ts not the connection your using deff. something else.

Solution:

1. Try another diff. torrent programme.
2. Try and use a diff. URL for the Torrent your trying to download.

just my 2c

It would have been clearer if you didn't start a new thread.

If you only need to upload, try switching to EDGE, I consistently get over 100kbps upload speed.

Agreed.

I personaly don't give a ..... about the Upload speed... Download is what i'm into. Just my 2c

Agree on Edge upload speed but latency kills VOIP

For video VOIP HSDPA is the only option.

How about keeping to the 256 kb promised in current marketing material?
