Humans succumb to computer’s power

Of course, were Kramnik to challenge Deep Fritz to a far simpler game of Monopoly later that same day, it would be clueless as to how to even roll the dice. Deep Fritz is good at Chess because it's a massive behemouth of a machine with computing power up the wazoo. It isn't intelligent in anything but the vaguest sense of the word, it can just calculate bazillions of differing scenarios and apply an, albeit very complicated, algorithm to find what it thinks would be the best one.

My computer just got a bit cocky after it read this . . so I punched it.

Last thing I want is an uppity machine - too Steven King'ish for my liking ;)

Must be a mac problem - my pc just sits there in the corner, meekly, begging for forgiveness just for being a PC.

You shouldn't follow the instructions on the e-mails you receive so closely, you won't win the lotto by deleting c:\* :p
or have you been trying the ATM card in the "stiffy" again... :eek:

Well, Fritz will fry Chessmaster easily. A much, much stronger engine. But not the strongest. In fact there are probably a half dozen or so other engines that are stronger still. The current champion engine is Rybka.

Do they play puter vs puter? I am just wondering how they know which engine is better than another.

Hi Dam

There are indeed computer world champs. Junior (which was known for its more attacking style…not certain if it is still the case) took top honours this year. Fritz was however absent. Here is a link: http://www.cs.unimaas.nl/wccc2006/schedule.html

Regarding Fritz versus Chessmaster: Fritz is seen as stronger, but it is debatable. Chessmaster uses an engine called “The King” which won a major computer chess championship where programs like Junior and Fritz were playing a couple of years back. Rybka is pretty much in a league of its own right now.

These monsters are just getting better and better.
 
Well, something like this only makes me think less of the game. If you want to play a game that modern computer/programmes can't stand a single chance in hell to win try the ancient Chinese game called Go. Check here
