Broadband: Fibre cheaper than cable, rivaling DSL

How is it that ADSL prices all around the world can go down exept for in RSA. Over here Telkom gives the impression that the prices keeps on going up and they stuggle all the more to provide the techonoly...

Neotel should really start ackting now - they start to waste to much time now!!!

“DSL rentals had been undergoing major price reductions since the beginning of 2006”, points out Vince Chook.

Oh really it did...Not in RSA though...

Neotel should only invest in fibre, even for their voice calls. It will allow better QoS, and since its digital, would allow greater number of calls, etc. Its great for Neotel that the prices are coming down. This is at least where Neotel is one up on Telkom - they dont have old technology to replace - they can immediately implement the latest technology that would give them a boost in 5-10 years.

This is especially relevant given that we would need high speed communication by 2010, not only to international markets, but also between the various cities and towns.

Hasn't the price for DSL rental come down this year? At all?
Yes it did but in the article was spoken of major price reduction internationaly and we haven't seen major price rejuctions in RSA in the last couple of years...

Seeing that Telkom has got this huge law suite to pay and a few other things, I doubt that the prices will come down next year...

I think I will be one of the first to jump to Neotel once lunched!

News from planet Earth...

The average DSL monthly rental is now under US$25 (R 177) at PPP (purchasing power parity) rate - US$4.5 less than the average for cable.

Meanwhile on planet South Africa, inhabitants have to get on with life with an insidious parasite called Telkom that constantly feeds off them. Scientists at MyADSL are working day and night to find a cure for this dreaded affliction.

They are getting closer to a cure, and have narrowed down the reasons for the parasites existence to the hospitable environment created by and acidic fungus called Ivy, which is eating into the ICASA shield. This shield is meant to block out UV$ light, which the Telkom parasite thrives on. The MyADSL scientists have also ascertained that nothing is being done about the ineffectiveness of the shield due to Paris syndrome, which is a type of narcoleptic disorder. ICASA engineers are literally falling asleep on the job through no fault of their own…

Help may be on the way, with the Neotel colony offering a glimmer of hope. Once construction of the Neotel colony is complete, inhabitants are likely to migrate in the hope of a parasitic-free future. :D

What the use fiber is getting cheaper!!!!!! I cant even get ADSL because our area is on fiber........I applied 2 years ago for the service..

Come NeoTel.........Lets kick Hellkoms @SS:mad:

Nice one, ryan411:D

Sometimes I just wish I did not know some things. Like knowing what ADSL costs in USA leaves a bitter taste in my mouth and will do so for some time.

One more exhibit for Icasa to ignore and yell "no proof"

Neotel won't be laying any FTH fiber they have said before they intend to piggy back on telkom and provide last mile access through CDMA radio techonology. Just so no one get their hopes up :). Alot of residential developments are putting in their own fiber these days. Blair Atholl and Jackal creek are just two examples.

IMO the all too common Telkodemonopolies excuse of "NO!!! you cannot have ADSL bcos the exchange in your area runs on fibre" is a load of crap.

If there were fibre from the local exchange to a customer's premises then there would be some truth to this lie [that Telkodemonopolies invented for the specific purpose of repeatedly shooting itself in the foot], and then we could at least get VDSL. The only fibre from an exchange to a customer's premises is fibre used for Digicrap, the rest must all be copper.

Telkodemonopolies seriously wants us to believe that it's entire ATM backbone runs exclusively on copper? - perhaps a fibre enema is just what the de facto monopolistic beast needs to get rid of the BS.

How exactly are they going to piggy back on Telkom when they are providing their own access? LMA is the only thing they need from Telkom.

This is due to Telkom rigidly sticking to their current network design/architecture philosopy which dictates that DSLAMs stay in the exchange and will not move closer to the customer (e.g. curb box).

Not 100% sure what the reason is? Maybe cost implications, current vendor inability, or skills shortage, tampering, theft or general loss of centralised management control? Doesnt seem logical that they are prepared to move a fiber TDM muxs closer to the customer for voice, but wont to do they same with mini-DSLAMs which a very similar in nature?

If they would use a more distributed architecture we would all be within range to have ADSL2+. The bandwidth required to feed this is a whole other debate tho.

let me clarify...LMA access will either be through Telkom's local loop or CDMA they are not going to dig up curbs a lay their own infrastructure. Nobody is going to rock the boat in this country as there no real threat of private competition. It will be atleast ten years before we get todays technology...

Check out the Neotel presentation from the MyADSL conference. They didn't say exactly what they plan to do, but they did mention fibre and Wimax as well as CDMA. Maybe all those residential developments should speak to Neotel, 'cos Telkom's not going to help them connect to the world.
