EASSy Consortium Sign Supply Contract

Easy Does IT

There was talk that this will reduce the stanglehold that Telkom has on South African Int bandwidth.

Will this not prove to be another cash cow, or wll this result in a reduction in prices. When I here the word Telkom, I get the shivers and the hair on the back of my neck stands up.

Will Neotel, MTNNS, Verizon etc etc also have access to this cable BY BUYING BANDWITH INDEPENDENTLY OF TELKOM, or are we now "WELL AND TRULY STUFFED"

Another milestone was reached on 23 February 2007 when the members of the project met in Nairobi and agreed to pledge in excess of $200 million for the project.

$200 million is about R1 500 million.

It is a peanuts amount compared to Telkom's profits.

Telkom has for years been more than capable, both financially and technicaly to lay a new cable, but by doing so they would remove the artificially "limited" supply excuse they have used for years to fleece consumers.

Hmm...

Eassy failure

Well... I see here, it should have happened in Q4 2005. And the website hasn't been updated in two years. LOL. And obviously their English is almost as bad as their vision and planning skills:

The growth driver are:
> Open Competition
> Internet remarkable increase
> New Technology development
The results and consequences are:
> Rapid expansion of infrastructure
> Decline in costs of facilities
> Prices for services

One of the growth driver is internet remarkable increase.
One of the results and consequences is prices for services.

LOL?

Really it's all in there: Telkom sees it as another way to rip off more countries, no real digits on how much we as consumers are going to save, etc...

This is another display of Africa's dismal incompetence. Truly pathetic. And the sad thing is Telkom can build a new cable every two months from the profit they are sucking from us. The ANC makes a drunk, handless wheelbarrow pusher look fantastic these days.

"The EASSy project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2008."

Yeah right. More like 2018...

The advantage of a landing site in Maputo is that if Telkom dont offer competitive rates for their landing at Mtunzini, SA firms could approach the Mozam operator and simply buy from them - and the Mozam operator could make millions, if not billions, by undercutting Telkom and "exporting" their capacity to SA. Hopefully the EASSy agreement allows for it.
