Hi all

Is anyone using an unshaped ADSL account able to post some pings to various international servers?

I'm not sure if it's just today or if it has been like this for a while, but my latency seems a lot higher than normal on my unshaped account.

Later in the day..

Is that not the norm for unshaped in SA?
I don't think we even get close to the kind of latencies that international people get to SA. Even when using an unshaped connection, those are the response times I'm used to get. Even averaging at around 300ms to a server in Greece. Whilst people from the US are averaging sub 50ms to the same server.

Don't think it's a Webafrica thing, it's a Telkom (I should say SAIX I suppose) thing.

Yeah, not saying Web Africa is at fault. Just that there was much higher latency than what I've experienced.

im not on a unshaped account and here is my pings

Obviously a difference, but not much.

US to Greece roundtrip under 50ms? Didn't know the speed of light had changed...

I have also noticed that the latency has been getting worse on my unshapped account.

Not sure whats going on but its getting closer to shaped account latency.

Yep, same here. When I signed on for unshaped I used to get 250-350ms in WoW (the reason I got unshaped). Now I'm getting 350-500ms.

Same boat here, I only got unshapped for WoW and its starting to feel pointless.

Perhaps it is time to try Vanilla or something

Are the IS local only accounts you can get from Web Africa also unshaped?

I'm planning to get one of those for gaming locally, would it actually be better than a normal SAIX account? I guess for local anything should be fine though..

alchamy, LaRoosta are you guys able to post some pings?

Maybe Web Africa could comment on this as it doesn't seem to be an isolated problem.

Thanks for the replies.

I've found SAIX to be best for pretty much everything, local online gaming included.

SAIX (SGS) hosts most local game servers anyway.

Ja, thats why I'm getting a SAIX account for international, but i cant afford to use half of that on local FPS when I could get a 10GB local account for R70 from IS :/

I could check out SAIX's local only but it is far more expensive. Would the IS do?

Well from my experience it will depend where the local server is hosted, i.e. on IS or SAIX network. Playing a FPS game hosted by Gamezone with a SAIX dsl account, i generally get higher pings than playing the same game on a SAIX server. Not a huge difference, but I suppose it depends on how serious you are about loosing :p

Also in the past people with IS accounts tended to have more problems that SAIX accounts.

I would love to post some pings unfortunately my DSL is down courtesy of Telkom. Once it is up again I will post some results here.

I think all local traffic is unshaped on any account. The problem with gaming on an IS account is dodgy IS-SAIX peering as most of the games servers are on SAIX.
