Please give me your views about the best anti-virus software to use. I would please like to know your views about aspects such as system resource utilization, scanning time, update release intervals, support and subscription/once-off fees. Also express your views about functions of the software, for example email scanning and the like.

I am currently doing online research on AVG Professional 7.5, Kaspersky 6.0, NOD32 2.7. I am very interested in those products. Which one would be the best and, if you think one not listed here would be better, please give your reasons for thinking so (while giving your views about the above aspects and functions of the software).

Feel free to discuss every possible aspect about the software as I need to have enough information about the pros and cons software to buy it without any doubt. If you disagree about someone about a piece of software or one of it's aspects/functions, please elaborate.

P.S What is the difference between AVG Professional 7.5 and AVG Free 7.5, except not having to pay anything? I am at a loss to that question.

To answer your main question, i depends entirely on what your needs are, if you are a normal home user avg free should be fine. I use it and am very happy with it, not a resource hog at all & updates itself daily effortlessly.

Same here! I used to have Norton Internet Security 2006 on my pc, but now it's liberated by AVG 7.5 Free Edition & as fast as the day before I installed Norton on it. Yay!

Another vote for NOD32, best "in-the-wild" scanner, extremely fast scans and very low system resources.

When I installed parallels I was relieved to see they wisely included Kaspersky's anti-virus software which is also available free of charge from AOL. Seems pretty good to me wrt to speed and judicious use of available resources.

I use AVG Free. Granted no anti-virus will be perfect, it's managed to protect me fine so far catching one or two stray viruses I have attracted.

It updates fast, scans fairly fast and is 1000% better than Norton.

Thanks for your input so far, but please give reasons why you think that particular anti-virus is best, I need to have this information. And thanks for everyone who gave reasons (broken1 in particular).

So keep going :)

My main reason for choosing Kaspersky is that it regularly performs well in most studies and it is free.

Free versions (AVG & Avast!) are best to use IMO, daily updates and never had proplems with either. I use AVG on my laptop and Avast! on all my desktop pc's.
The reason for using free...
The vendor doesn't make money, so the possibility of authoring virusses just to stay in business is much less.
