One would have expected the minister to include international experts from broadband leaders like South Korea, Japan and Denmark, but she had other ideas. Her Broadband Council was to be chaired by Dr Victor Lawrence from Ghana, with the rest of the panel residing in Kenya, Senegal and Botswana.

The real key to solving SA's broadband woes lie in convincing government to heed the advice of industry experts by introducing unhindered competition in the fixed line arena. Only then will ordinary South Africans enjoy what many of their international counterparts consider a basic necessity: true, affordable broadband.
