This is nuts, but I'm benefiting off it.

Keep in mind that 1 SEK is equivalent to 1 ZAR.

Swedish summer is coming, and this nation of 9M people are heading off to their 1M boats and 4M cottages, and they need to remain connected. The past few weeks has seen a lot of advertising by the mobile operators for mobile broadband. Here's an example of the latest ongoing campaigns.

Tele2 Sweden announced today that their unlimited monthly 3G plan (nationwide coverage) with 384kbps down and 64kbps up is priced at 99 SEK/month. You only get the SIM card, but a modem is an extra 100 SEK a month, which is still nothing.

See details: http://www.editorial.tele2.se/?page...redband&t2page=privat_internet_mobiltbredband

This was in response to the packages offered by "3" (Hutchison), where you have the option to select any of the following packages:

- 1 GB/month plan 384kbps down/64kbps up: 99 SEK/month (SIM card only)
- Unlimited monthly plan 3.6Mbps down/384kbps up HSDPA: 199 SEK/month (SIM card only).

Modems cost an additional 99 SEK/month.

In Sweden, when you say "unlimited", it means that you won't be getting a phone call from the operator the morning after you've hogged up the entire base station as opposed to the UK where their idea of unlimited means 3 or 5 gigs a month! Just to test, I did 16GB the first night with the unlimited HSDPA plan from "3" as I had 6 FTP sessions across 3 different servers running at 500kbps each, totaling 3Mbps.

The plan now is to cover +95% of the population with 7.2Mbps HSPA by end of 2008 as we only have 3.6Mbps in 3 key cities, and the rest of the country only has 384kbps.

I have a HSDPA router in my car at all times, so I can read email or make VoIP calls while stuck in traffic. I bought a card from the operator and wanted a WiFi solution, so I got a Dovado WRG www.dovado.com, popped in the card, and plugged it into the cigarette plug. 3Mbps Mobile Hotspot @ 100km/h!

Cheers

Yeah, really impressed with VodaCom right now...

ZAR289.00 per month here for 1GB HSDPA [up to 1.8Mbits/s] excluding the modem, and ZAR349.00 including an HSDPA modem.

Considering the local fixed line monopoly, Vodacom isn't that far off on the 1GB plan.

LOL, while we don't have unlimited HSDPA, would now be the appropriate time to brag that the speed limit in SA is 120km/h? :p :D.

We have 110km/h in the major cities as the speed limit, but 120km/h in the rural areas. The only reason I wrote 100km/h is because I'm reading my email at that speed. I reply it 80km/h......in the wrong lane!

:D

A big difference is that the Swedish contracts is all 12 month contracts. So for the card you only pay SEK 1188, not more than R2000 like in SA

 for the safety of all Swedes, I suggest that you investigate some voice recognition options :D.

While I don't think we will see uncapped in SA too soon, I think there's room for a product that offers lower priced off peak usage.

If Vodacom's data network costs are based on size (speed) of their leased lines (i.e. what Telkom charges them) then surely it makes sense for Vodacom to encourage its customers to use the network 24/7?

A benefit of this will be that home users will do their downloads and automatic updates more in off peak times meaning the network will be less loaded over peak times leaving more capacity for business users.

Obviously Vodacom would want to increase revenue in this way so I am thinking of a deal where one pays a slight markup on current data bundles but with the benefit of, say, getting a MB or 2 free for each MB used during off peak times.

If I remember correctly, V3G posted about a year ago a comment that data peak hours were from around 5:00 to around 23:00.

Are you allowed to provide us with the current reality V3G?

No, it goes later than that. Full-tilt till about 1am, from about 6am.

I'm all for an off-peak product. Need to figure out the structure. As always all suggestions welcome.
