Telkom promises to do broadband

This is all so wrong on so many levels I don't even know where to begin....

\seriously - how much did they pay this guy - 'links to online games servers' !?

May Hilton Tarrant's name live on in infamy.

While the main point of the article about ADSL prices continuing to drop sounds feasible, the rest of it is just a pile of stinky brown stuff.

While Telkom's "wholesale" arm may be nominally separate, the ISP portion certainly is not. Telkom's ISP is also getting treatment that is not available to competitors in the market.

Even though Telkom claims to have searate wholesale, retail and ISP entities, the reality is that they are operationally a single entity. Telkom's product offerings and customer support is undeniable evidence of this.

The fact that you get a single consolidated bill, that you can call one Telkom number and get transferred seamlessly across the divisions, and that there is only one customer complaint division that will sort out problems across the supposed separate companies clearly demonstrate this.

In reality Telkom is just one large company that operates in differnet areas of the market and uses its integration to compete unfairly since it is legislatively protected in that other companies are not able to become fixed line providers.

It high time that the competition authorities take a machete to the beast and carve it up.

It will be a happy day when the CC rules against the DoC in its case against the Competition Commision ruling that Telkom be broken up, and effectively deregulates the fixed line market.

Right, now where's my lithium?

Did I miss the "Reporter for sale" ad in the classifieds?

I dont understand how MyADSL can have this on their site? It is just like the GTS thing, where they get free publicity, and the consumer is still getting screwed.

We are still FAR too expensive. Telkom is still profiteering. Telkom is still not obeying the law in terms of the ADSL regulations. I really think MyADSL should be very strict in what they allow to be published, this article is very misleading to the uneducated.

Was thinking if he's being sarcastic?

Then I checked - Moneyweb. Right, he needed to please the investors and remind them that telkom are still able to shaft their customers and whilst pretending they are making an effort to 'reduce' prices.

Maybe we should do some investigation into this 'reporters' bank account...or maybe he's getting uncapped broadband for R200????

I thought this article was going to be about real price cuts, but its just the minor cuts we 've already heard about.

I won't believe that Telkom is really split until they are two totally independent companies, and that includes separate shares for each with anyone who works high up in either being barred from owning shares in the other company. Telkom's dishonest history means they are quite likely to be giving their retail section preferential prices or cheating in some other way.

can somebody explain this statement to me: "One media report even said that if you subtract the ADSL access charge from the Do Broadband offerings, in some cases ISPs "would only have R14,44 with which to play with [sic]". This totally misses the wholesale point. It's very hard to believe that Telkom will "wholesale" ADSL access to ISPs at retail rates!"

Is he being sarcastic or is he supporting Telkom's case?

i will admit the bundles are great except for the capping, its still a problem only if telkom would make the 4mb uncapped (and use the fair usage policy) and make the other bundles caps bigger.. and telkoms fails to realise that you guys are falling behind really fast. they launched the 100mb services here two days ago, and now there are free 2mb wifi services around norwich... just hope neotel can help you guys in broadband ;)

In my personal opinion I don't think we should become like the Gestapo and everytime we don't agree with something we refuse to publish it. That being said, there still needs to be some sort of editorial management but IMO if it comes from a respectable journalistic source it's fine. It is obviously open for discussion here and the truth will generally come through if there are debatable facts. But we also need to hear what other sources are saying so that when someone repeats these facts we know where it originated.

I do find some of the claims in the article a bit off balance, espcially where pricing in concerned, but it's a different opinion and thankfully you chaps are too smart to think otherwise :D.

Hi Derekc

I am also not certain why Hilton will say this. In our article we gave the hard facts with reference to the actual wholesale rates. It is therefore not “very hard to believe that Telkom will "wholesale" ADSL access to ISPs at retail rates”, but it is simply what has transpired. The figures are in the public domain which is why I am somewhat surprised that a respectable journalist like Hilton would not just look at the figures and state the facts.

They can repackage a turd as often as they like, when you open the package it is still just a turd. Broadband in SA is incredibly overpriced. If you are new to the forum, I urge you to look at what folks overseas get for their money... We are being raped like no-body's business in this country by overpaid, overly comfortable, money mongering buggers in the hallways of Telkom, who I am inclined to believe pay government officials to make their road a little less bumpy.

We look at Neotel for hope and I am very hopeful indeed! But don't forget, Neotel is like a little boy wrestling fan, who gets the "chance of a lifetime" to wrestle with his idol The ROCK!

Chances are he will get pummeled, but if he manages to go for the groin, he could win... ;)

4mbps ADSL access with 3GB cap[/b]

What good is that to man or beast?!

Listen, keep your bloody Encyclopedia Britannica. When Telkom can give me a 30GB cap on an unshaped line for the same price, maybe I'll think you're not being bribed to write this crap.

a respectable journalist like Hilton

Judging by that nonsense article, I wouldn't use the words "respectable" or "journalist" to describe him, but anyway.

I don't really see how these new offerings could be considered cheap by any measure. R279 for 1GB? On a per-GB basis that's probably somewhere between 1500% and 3000% more expensive than the typical offerings in other countries. (I guess I'm just a "skeptic".) It's not really much "cheaper", as they're OFFERING less in exchange for less money - they're basically just opening new lower-end markets to about the same rip-off pricing levels.

I wonder how much telkom will pay me if I start saying good things about them as well?

But you're forgetting that the little boy has a very powerful weapon i.e. a next generation network that can handle anything! :D
