Virtual network operators the next evolution of a competitive telecoms market

It's an unmistakable fact that our esteemed minister, Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, isn't nearly the right person for the job she's been assigned to do. In the years she's been MoC she's done pretty much bugger-all constructive except waste taxpayers money and attend Telkom and cell networks' parties. Oh and of course taking naps.. tut tut.. that's what happens when one's age is hovering around 70 years. Yes the "big seven-oh" - quite a rack of years aye. Retirement has a bloody stump for an arm from trying to beat that door down, she just won't listen. The mutual consensus is that she should move over for someone more.... capable... to take her position. Of course Telkom (and the gang) won't be too impressed with that as Ivy has been shielding Telkom from competition like a dingo protecting a meaty carcass. Those darn vultures (reads: people who want competition) aren't getting anywhere near that carcass while Ivy is around. Eish!

And so while select people in Government protect their own interests and tend to their bank balances - whether topped up occasionally with money from those with deep pockets and vested interests or not - the SA economy continues to take a beating and Government doesn't see the bruises. We can't rely on tourism forever you know, we've gotta get those people over here to stay permanently, not just come over for a holiday and then go back. Not much chance of many coming over permanently and bringing their businesses along though as two month's ADSL line rental with a 30GB cap is enough to pay for a plane ticket back overseas! Simple example indeed, but countries abroad rely heavily on cheap data and voice communications, and unfortunately the only thing in SA that's cheap about the voice and data communications is Telkom's attitude and Government's apathy toward the situation.

It seems though that Ivy is an antidote to progress. Imagine if SA ended up looking like the rest of Africa just because of a few people who didn't feel like doing their job??? What a waste.
