SABC looks at increasing TV license fees

Great...so we have to pay more for crap we don't watch.. I don't even recall the last time I watched anything on SABC
 
Mpofu further said that they are forging ahead with plans to ‘force’ new Pay TV license holders to ensure that their subscribers have a TV license before allowing them to subscribe to any television subscription service.

What a load of crap!! Why do the SABC continue to think that everybody owes them something?

TV Licenses should be payable to ICASA, not them!
 
I wonder how long it will be untill there's a MySABC website? :D
 
I ONLY watch discovery channel, National Geographic, MM1, MM2 and sometimes MNet. SABC? Wtf, people actually bother watching that? They should just encode regular TV channels...then you only have to pay for it if you actually want it. Why do you need to "license" your TV? That's just a load of crap. Or am I missing the point?
 
I'm beginning to hate sabc more than telkom. so we have to now pay more money for programs we don't watch! I think its time to get rid of the TV and build a media center where I can watch better quality, more choice and the latest episodes off the net!

I wish the SABC a slow painful death...

And if they think they are going to come to my house to check if my licence is valid... i hope they can run really fast hen i let the dogs out...
 
I see tonight our local channels are not exactly pushing the boat out for entertainment. No movies at peak viewing time. None on SABC1/2/3, but just one crappy drama on eTV at 22:15. Is this why we need to pay a fee??

Someone please remind me exactly why a state owned/subsided broadcaster, who already recieves a nice cut of our hard spent tax money, is allowed to force us same poor sods to pay them (again!) even more money just to own a TV?

Geeeez, the mob couldn't even pull off a racket like that ;)

Which begs just one more question . . .
How are these same crooks going cope when things like IPTV and mobileTV start taking off in SA?
Or do you think that their good mates at ICASA are going to bail them out and make us pay SABC for every PC and cellphone that we own?!?!?

Oooops! Maybe i shouldn't be giving them ideas :eek:

It also goes to show how totally useless and inefficient the sabc are when they come up with schemes like this - they are too pathetic to implement their own reliable methods of collecting licence fees so they decide to pass their responsibility over to pay tv licence holders!


According to the SABC CEO, South Africa is a country of inequality, and the reality is that people who can afford a TV license must subsidize those households who can not afford it. He said that people who subscribe to a pay-TV service clearly fall into the category of households who can afford to pay their TV license and that the broadcaster can not afford for these individuals to default on their license payments.

I'm fed up with this notion that in the name of equality the better off folks are forced to subsidize others who cannot afford to go it for themselves. For heavens sake!!!! If they can afford to buy a tv then surely they can afford the licence to go with it.
Unfortunately it's the guys who 'do the right thing' and fork out for a licence year after year who will be the subsidees - how's that for rewarding a person for 'doing the right thing'?

this kind of s__t really p____s me off!! I mean where do you draw the line. Pay for tv licenses, water, electricity - hell, lets pay for their DSL too!

So every person belonging to this "previously advantaged ethnic group" is getting milked while the others remain unharmed? I know lots of people from other races who subscribe to DSTV, so let's not generalise and turn this into a racial thing unless you have some cold hard stats?
 
uhm.. didn't they turn a profit last yr? 2ndly they must choose between ad's and tc licence, having both is raking in on both sides especially when they want everyone with a tv device to pay.
 
Poor people don't have to pay their tv licenses? I thought everyone who has a tv is supposed to pay?? Am I missing something here?
 
I'm, not even wowed by this, everyone that can afford anything subsidises those who can't, electricity the main one. YOU ALL KNOW WHAT I MEAN!!!
 
Hmmm, I find most of the posts so far rather pathetic. Knee-jerk reactions against what you don't like, and there seems to be plenty of that. How about being constructive for a change?
