I am sadly in a "discussion" (more like a full on argument) with Telkom. As you might know, you need to give them 30 days notice via a fax (011 477 7292). Now being Telkom I called right after I faxed them the notice on the 31st May to make sure they got it and they did.

I now notice that the line is still active. I called up Joburg cancellation department and they say they never got the fax. Surprise surprise!!

Things to remember:

1. You need to give them 30 days notice for the ADSL line.
2. Fax them: 011 477 7292
3. Make sure they get your fax (phone: 011 477 7310 or 011 477 6166). Take down ladies name, it will either be Hender or Denise.
4. Keep proof of Fax, both original and sent confirmation from fax machine.
5. If after the 30 days the line is still active you can pop into a Telkom shop with the goodies above that you have kept and they have to "suspend/cancel" the line on the spot based on the information you have given them. Obviously they should credit you the money they have been overcharging you.

I hope this helps.

Update: If you are lucky enough to be close to a Telkom shop, then do yourself a favour and go there to organise any cancellations or changes or whatever. I have used the ones in Sea Point and Tygervalley (CPT)and believe it or not they sort out your issue on the spot. If they can't then they usually phone someone who can help you.

Another Update (March, 2009): I have just left for "greener" pastures (Seattle, US) and when I cancelled my account (both phoneline and ADSL), I just had to call the telkom helpdesk 2 days before I wanted to cancel my line and viola it was canceled. I actually tried to call my line after they said it would be disconnected and it was indeed disconnected. So it worked.

i had a similar experience. i went to the Telkom Shop near me to cancel my line as i was moving. i did this on the 29th april 2007. i moved on 1 May 2007. 4 days later after moving successfully i noticed my adsl line was still active. i phoned 10219. after being transferred 3 times, from normal orders to adsl back to orders i was told to FAX the cancellation to them. i replied that this was BS!!! since i moved into a new place with NO physical telephone line how can i fax them?!?!?!?! i mentioned as well that i went to a telkom shop and did the cancellation there. to my dismay the telkom shop seemed to never have faxed the cancellation through. after 45 minutes of bitching and moaning the last girl i spoke to was kind enough to immediately suspend the line. NOT cancel, this happened about 2 weeks later. bottom line after 7 weeks of waiting a telkom techie arrived and installed a new physical line in my new place. fortunately 2 days later i was able to do a ADSL self-install.

advice as was stated: before you cancel, make sure you have all your ducks in a row and are prepared to wait.

I just called one of those numbers like 10219 and they did it.

If I order an ADSL Line from telkom, say on the 1st of June. I start paying R245 a month ADSL Rental (access) after it goes active on say the 7th of June. If I cancel that line on the 8th, does telkom charge me for June + 30 days. In other words do I have to pay July as well as the 30days after notice falls into July?

I am making a pretty good guess here and saying you will be paying June and part of July. it's 30 days from the day you submit you cancellation. it's not based on calendar month.

me too... i was moving, called them up two weeks ago and they canceled the old line (no fax required) two days later. today they're installing the new line :D
maybe they require fax if you were on contract? or are they just taking chances

I wasn't on a contract when I needed to send proof of cancellation. Did you have a DSL line though? the fact you could just cancel without proof that you asked them to cancel it seems strange.

I phoned the number. asked them to cancel the line. and put in an order for a new one at my new address. all over the phone. no faxing required. just kept the reference numbers that were given to me.

yep, the dsl was the only reason why i had the line...
it seems they give u a hard time if you are canceling outright and not ordering a new line...
so in future, just cancel, order a new line, and cancel that new order after they have deactivated the old line...;)

sweet, thanks for the tips, this'll come in handy if I have to deal with some of the local crowd in CT.
