All Systems Go for IPv6 in SA

I'm glad to see that someone is at least thinking about the issue of IPv6.

Unfortunately there are far too many companies and ISP's that have pushed IPv6 to back-burner status and with less than 4 years to go before a potential crisis a more concerted effort is certainly desired.

"Enterasys says that now that local domain names can be resolved to IPv6 addresses * IPv6 is a public reality in SA."

Uhh local domains have been able to be resolved to ipv6 addresses for ages, instead of an A record you use an AAAA record. I guess what he ment to say is local domains can be resolved USING ipv6

The big concern for a while has been Uniforum's coza root servers. They were pushing quite hard for PI and I think that they are one of the first to be applying.

Once they get their allocation the coza root will be able to answer queries on IPv6 and thus allow (potentially) native IPv6 only services.

Sorry about the reply to a very old thread, but it really irritates me that people keep on propogating this rubbish: -

IPv6 brings several benefits, including simpler and faster routing (meaning less processing power and memory needed by network devices), much better security, and more support for mobile devices, an increasingly important issue as we move to wireless networking technologies.

IPv6 has one benefiit, and one benefit only: more addresses.

That means that there's no commerical incentive to introduce it, which is why, 15 years after the standard was published, adoption is still glacially slow.

Read through the article. Interesting read, thanks for posting. I didn't see anything in there that said the speed wouldn't be quicker though. Is that an agreed benefit?

Either way, from what i've read, it does allow for end to end connectivity if desired. Just because some people don't want it, doesn't mean others won't. On that note, is that something the ISP's could offer? Blocks of IP's for customers without having to worry about paying huge sums of cash?
