Okay, so slowly but surely folks will start installing more and more Vista machines. This thread is dedicated to people helping one another with tweaking Vista for performance. Lets see how it goes, if the demand is not tight, then it will be unstickied.

1. Speed up by changing performance settings
START>COMPUTER>RIGHTCLICK AND CLICK PROPERTIES>SELECT ADVANCED SYSTEM SETTINGS>PERFORMANCE
2. Do registry tweaks to avoid silly background tasks
Search google for registry tweaks in order to remove low disk space checking and DOS name complience checking
3. Get drivers up to date and keep them current
This is the single most important thing I can think of until SP1.
4. Speed up SATA disks
Go to control panel and then to device manager. Select disks. Right click on each and select proprties and then policies. Enable advanced options with the knowledge that you increase the risk of data loss.

For those who dont have the recommended ram (I think its around 2 gigs?) can plug in a flash drive, and activate ReadyBoost (Properties of drive -> ReadyBoost tab). Its not as good as getting more ram, but its a speed improvement for loading etc.

Nice explanation for those interested.

I also find that going to Start -> Control Panel -> Power Options, and picking High Performance (This is for Desktop PCs really) gives me a nice boost, aswell as getting rid of a few things that vista does that irritate me :P. You can also go to advanced here, and tweak some power settings, like making the power button actually turn your pc off, not hibernate it.

Don't forget to turn off Password Protected sharing in the properties of Network, if you want to share things for everyone without the need for usernames and passwords. Also don't forget to add the group "Everyone" when you are sharing stuff ;)

Can't really think of anything else atm

Get rid of Vista Nagging!!!!

If you are tired of always having to confirm when you want to do something in Vista then you have to disable your User Account Control (UAC) This feature makes for a more secure OS but its one of the most common reason that I've heard people to dislike vista... Below is the link on how to get rid of the constant nagging and essentially speed up Vista, but although this wont harm your system, disabling it might allow viruses, hackers or malicious software to mess with your Windows Vista! So do it at your own risk :)

cool,I just installes proper vista business last night and still feeling my way,One thing that irritates me still is that i am looking for the run command and cant seem to find it.I cheecked help section but they say right click on the program,i just wanna go straight there not right click damn it.

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt.

You can also put a shortcut in your start menu by right clicking on your taskbar, going to properties. Go to the Start Menu tab, click the Customise Button. 3/4s down the list you can tick Run Command.

Simply type the command into the search space in the start menu. It isn't obvious, but it doubles as a run box. :)

Another Stupid Thing I Did.well I Have 2 Hdd.i Installed Xp On Another Hdd While The Vista Hdd Was Still In.now I Cant Boot The Vista Drive.i Have Now 2 Drives On My Pc With 2 Os Systems.how Will I Get Vista To Boot Again.and How Can I Dual Boot

guys i love it,i love it.i successfully can boot windows xp from one drive and boot vista from another drive.
So at start up i have 2 choices, although vista business does have this feature at the os choosing,It is a bit sluggish so went searching the net for a long time till i came up with a tweak, this is not a tweak per say,but it will encourae many members here on this forum to install vista. It works perfect for me.

ok first you must have 2 hard drives
first hdd install vista,if everything works register it,but if you on xp upgrade to vista
tell vista to keep you xp windows on the drive as windows old..ok done
after everything is installed, look in computer on the vista system and put alll your data from the windows old that you have in the relevant places ok
next delete the windows old folder ok

now switch of pc and put other drive in as a slave on the ide 1 cable, now the set up is id1 vista drive master and clean drive slave on the ide slot
boot up ,let cd be firstboot(bios controlled)
have the xp cd in and say install on the clean drive(select the clean drive to install xp(make sure to format via xp the clean drive)
After xp installed check everything ok now reboot.

then you will see xp will boot all the time and there is no vista, dont worry just unplug the xp drive now and reboot, but put the vista cd in and say boot from cd.
Now vista cd will load,,follow instruction and you will see to repair vista, click repair vista windows, this will take 1 minute and vista will reboot,Now after reboot vista will work again.
switch off pc and insert the xp drive again.

Now reboot and vista will now have that menu that says early windows or vista, just enter the os choice and test xp boot properly,If it does then you in luck

reboot again and select vista and if this boot ok then you also in luck, cause now you have a genuine dual boot os system.

this is what i did exactly and if you do this you will have a dual boot xp and vista, that works 100%,unlike other sites and wiki, they dont work,It took me 4 hours to find this out and make work ,SO please no partitioning drives,it will just cause headaches.

thanks to antwan for giving insight into doing this...i love you man

after updating all vista updates,my sound finally came right.I dont know which one fixed it but sound is clear now..the whopping 50 megabytes vista latest nvidia drivers fixes all game compatibility's,I tested call of duty/carbon/justcause/overdose/age of empires and they work now in vista.

32 bit or 64 bit? Is this a version of Vista Business? How do I find out which I have?

i have vista business and when i installed it it just selected 32 bit by default,
listen check in the control panel under performance or go to admin and select somewhere there you will see graphs, honestly just go to my computer and select propertys.this will tell you
