I've been doing quote some reading about Dual Core gaming the past couple of days and also experienced some things myself.

Here's the full story...

(Follow up to http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=81725)

As far as I understand there are hundreds of people experiencing problems with gaming on Dual Core machines. The common problems seem to be random slowdowns, speedups, frames problems, stuttering, freezing and more. There seems to be a few ways around this although I never seems to fully resolve the problems and only apply to certain games on certain machine configurations as explained here.

This is the rundown...

Some people resolve the problem by using the following method

1) start the game
2) ctrl, alt, del to the task manager
3) Under the Processes tab, find the .exe of the game you are running
4) Right Click on the process and select the "affinity" option
5) make sure only one CPU core is checked
6) Go back to the game and play
7) If problems still persist, try setting the affinity to the other core.

where other fixes include the Microsoft Hotfix (not included in windows updates) for both Intel and AMD, or the AMD Dual Core Optimizer driver or by disabling Cool & Quiet and even changing registry entries.

Some forums with dual core problems can be found here.

It's good to know that certain companies are releasing or developing games that fully support Dual Core.. (like the latest patch for Quake 4)..as where other companies warn you about Dual Core and recommend driver and patches before installation (Company of Heroes actually requests you to install the AMD Dual Core Optimizer driver before installation.)

But these are only for newish games, what about all the other older games? I found a thread about dual core problems with NeverWinterNights with over 250 users having various dual core problems. One dude actually just changed his 3600+ AMD to 4400+ X2 and found 70% of his games to have problems. (He changed back to his old cpu and his new dual core is on ebay now)

Most of us users on Mybroadband are more than fimiliar with downloading drivers, patches and updates or even editing registry but there are Thousands of people playing games of Dual core machine who dont even know what a registry is. I personally think it kinda sucks to go buy a game only to come home to discover that your kickass dual core machine runs the game worse than your old P4 2.4 PC. Are these issues the reason (except for piracy) why PC games are so much cheaper than console games. The fact that you can't really be guaranteed even though your specs are up to date that machine will actually be stable/compatible with the game.

Sorry for the long boring post, but after reading all the thousands of problems people are having while playing games on Dual Core and even experiencing these problems myself I actually feel sorry for these people.

We just want to play and enjoy our games. Maybe consoles are the future of games. :(

That's so sad :(

I've had a dual core 5200+ X2 for a few months now and I can't say I experiance any problems / slowdowns running any games. I run Windows XP 64 Bit Edition on that machine though.

Hope you find the solution ^^

Best wishes

Well seems like this problem does not affect all users. (that would have been bad for Intel/AMD) ...but like I mentioned previously, for some people to play certain games on their Dual Core machines ain't a walk in the park.

I feel your pain.

Mind to give us a rundown of your system just for interest sake?

yeah my unreal tournament has become unplayable since I switched to dual core :(
the only games I've really played since have been sudoku and solitaire... I'll be very happy if the affinity thing works, will test it when I get home, thanks DW!

awesome, it worked :D
I'll play around with the other utilities as well, haven't really 'tweaked' my system in years...

You guys talking about dualcore or core 2 duo there is a difference! I have not had a problem on any of the games i have played ranging from UT2004 right through to stalker.

theres a simple fix for this that worked for me.

was to do with ms dual core patch, registry setting and /usepmtimer in the boot.ini

i used to have these issued with Thief and warrior within - above made it go away permanently.

(dont know where original link is though - should work intel too)

How to install the AMD X2 drivers, hotfix, the correct way.

Hey, i decided to make this thread since i was once in the need of some answers i had as to why my amd x2 was having problems with gaming, speed ups slow downs, sound familiar?....well im going to show you step by step how to install the drivers, hotfix, and several other things that need to be done. People often say that the amd drivers are used for Cool and Quiet only, that is not true, i speak from expierience as i have had the amd X2 cpu's since the first week of launch and have played around with them for 5 months already. Just follow these steps to get the best stability and performance from your amd x2 cpu.

PLEASE BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST!!

1 - Install the amd drivers, download it from here...

2 - read this website (link missing) and downlaod the hotfix here

3 - Edit your registry to enable the HOTFIX, follow these steps.
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Right-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager, point to New, and then click Key.
3. Type Throttle for the new key name.
4. Right-click Throttle, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
5. Type PerfEnablePackageIdle for the value name.
6. Right-click PerfEnablePackageIdle, and then click Modify.
7. In the Edit DWORD Value box, type 1. In the Value data box, make sure that Hexadecimal is selected, and then click OK.
8. Quit Registry Editor.

4 - Make sure your BOOT.ini has this command in it, /usepmtimer to check, right click on My Computer go to properties, click on the ADVANCE tab, then under startup and recovery click on settings, then click on EDIT....make sure your boot.ini looks like this

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer

Finally your done, if anyone has any questions feel free to PM me, hopefully this will be a help to alot of people.

OK, since some people switch to single core after having issues with dual core, here is a simple way to remove the Hotfix and drivers.

1 - Uninstall the Hotfix, go into ad/remove programs, click on show updates and remove update numbered KB896256

2 - Reverse the registry entry.

3 - Uninstall the AMD drivers.

4 - Go into your boot.ini and remove /usepmtimer, and your done.

Yip, the reg fix and the dualcoreoptimiser sort all and any probs out. I have an Opty 165 running at 2700mhz and it performs stunningly well.

This applies to AMD and Intel Dual Core based CPU's

WindowsXP might need a patch to get Daul Core working properly.

Correct..

For Intel - The Microsoft Hotfix

For AMD - The Dual Core Optimizer and/or Microsoft Hotfix

but it does not really fully resolve all the problems...more of a bypass

Dual-Core and Quad-Core

Does anyne think it is at all possible that Microsoft is brining out XP Service Pack 3 BECAUSE of Dual-Core? Could Microsoft have made a patch that fixes XP so that it fully supports Dual-Cores?

I really think this is the case. I also hope that the first service pack Microsoft brings out for Vista will fix most of the bugs and compatibility issues with it.

Cheers Ya'll

I doubt it, SP3 was announced around January 2006, and will include all other updates out since SP2, until its release sometime in 2008. Probably won't be much of a service pack as they will have stopped selling XP by then.

i have xppro and a dual core and i have no issues and my xp is 3 years old with service pack 1,I never upgraded to sp2 or 3 as i prefer not to install K@K stuff i dont need as my security of my pc is jus fine.
Another question is does other service packs make games play better,i dont think so
