What is the dark web and how does it work?

I am the terror that flaps in the night. I am the scourge that pecks at your nightmares.

That time of the year again.

/off to find summarised post of last year

We often hear about the dark web being linked to terrorist plots, drug deals, knife sales and child pornography, but beyond this it can be hard to fully understand how the dark web works and what it looks like.

really?!? I have purchased knives from various places eg BidorBuy...is that the Dark Web?

:p

The dark web is simply the sites google isn't allowed to/can't index.

Mobile phones have been used by criminal gangs to organise themselves for a long time, and as a society we are comfortable with laws enabling police to tap telephones and catch criminals.
We are? I don't want anyone listening to my private conversations and most people feel the same way. Unfortunately in our non-democracy it has been forced on us.

Really? I thought you needed something like Tor to access the dark web.
Nope. Tor brought the dark web to the forefront with secure encrypted sites. The dark web is simply sites which actively seek to hide their content from google. This can be as simply as running an FTP server or some other obscure protocol to requiring registration or checking user agents or cookies.

Yes, you do need something like Tor or an I2P router to access the dark web. The technical description in the original article of how it works actually refers to the deep web instead. Looks like some journalist copied and pasted the wrong stuff again.

Actually the difference is subtle. Deep web is what google doesn't index. Dark web is what google is prevented from indexing. Registered on dark web sites before, they don't necessarily require Tor.

Here: https://onion.to/

Access *.onion sites without Tor.... if you're dumb enough to want to try. Either way, they may not need the Tor browser but they certainly need to pass through the Tor encryption layer.
