Hey,

I just got my 4mb line installed and it shows that it is connecting at 4096kbps downstream and 384kbps upstream, however, whenever I do a speedtest the max downstream is 416kbps.

Anybody know what the deal is with this? I live in Green Point, Cape Town.

Which is immensely annoying. I just got off the phone with ADSL tech support (Telkom). They have lodged a ticket with the fault. Will have to see how fruitful the problem-solvers are.

I never get more than 50KB downloads

I've been once told its like that due to shaping, and one way to get around it is to multi-thread your downloads.

I do find though that if you want to stream tv or any movice clip then it works great. I was watching NASA TV for the recent shuttle launch and it streams with a nicer picture on my 4meg line in comparison to what it used to on the 384 line.

But http downloads yes I agree it does feel like its not using the full line speed unless I multi-thread the download.

its due to shaping. I've also got a 4mb line from our ISP for Life(...sigh). During the day your downloading will slow down, but during the evenings it should be around 400 Kilobytes per second, depends if youre downloading P2P(and that depends on the seeders) or HTTP(depends on the HTTP server's speed and the amount of people using it), so the actual speeds may vary, but the fastest i've gotten was about 500. Good luck

go to games.saix.net

go to the file fault and download something

if you dont 400k/s something is wrong

also what internet package are you on, because things like uncapped 512 wont give you full 4meg speed

Even at night, downloading from anywhere gets met 40-50kb. I can't even stream properly, no matter what the time of day.

I have lodged a complaint, and the telkom dude also said that something is wrong. I have tried a few dsl accounts, makes no difference. Going to try an unshaped account tonight, but I have a feeling that nothing will come of it.

it's something i've long said. when downloading from international sites it is common for a single thread to max out at 50kB/s. it is not the case with local downloads

stefano international speedtests don't multithread hence why you may find the speedtests show as they do. try the iburst speedtest and see what speed that gives you

This is so sick...The same thing happened to me yesterday! I authenticate at 4096 and usually download at 425k per sec...but there has been alot of rain here and sometimes my line speed drops a bit etc but not for too long...now...I still authenticate at 4096 but cant download anything higher than 50k!!!! What is going on here people ...please give me some help here its driving me insane!

Grandmasters and others in the know please give your diagnosis urgently :)

Its not possible that they have downgraded me for some reason to 512 but I still connect at 4096?

TIA
