4mb line, 384kbps speeds

Yea, downloaded the file, still only getting 50kb.
ACK!!! Had Telkom phone me again this morning, all they can say is "we'll see what we can do"

Will try iburst test quick.

have you tried restarting your router? i had the same problem about a week or so ago. the word "crosstalk" came up. it's got to do with interference on the adsl line and then ur line speed will drop to something more stable. try restarting ur router and doing an international speed test at www.speedtest.net like u did before. otherwise u can also try the speedtest on openweb's website.

Have tried restarting it and same thing. In EL so I think we go through CT exchange, could be mistaken. Please someone clarify.....if I connect at 4096/384 should I get "up to 4mb" speeds...or do they connect everyone at that and just throttle you to what package you are on etc like 512 or 384? This is really bugging me people, please guys in the know shed some light on this for me urgently!

If you sync at 4096 you get 4mbps speeds, that's how it works. The lower you sync, the lower your speed is.

Concerning the original post.

If you are running Xp, download and run this program on your pc, there's a guide as well:
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

If you are running Vista, do this, taken from: http://grdead.ibloggie.com/reset-tcpip-and-winsock/

1. Check and repair Winsock corruption.
2. Click Start. In the Start Search dialog box, type: cmd, and right-click cmd.
3. Click Run as administrator.
4. Type: netsh winsock reset, and then press the ENTER key.
5. Type: Exit and press ENTER.
6. Restart the computer.

1. Reset the TCP/IP protocol.
2. Click Start. In the Start Search dialog box, type: cmd, and right-click cmd.
3. Click Run as administrator.
4. Type: netsh int ip reset, and then press ENTER.
5. Type: Exit and press ENTER.
6. Restart the computer.

Thanks Teraside,

I have done the Winfix, but it still seems not to be working. I am still connecting at 4096/384 and my line attenuation down is 52/15 which is the same I have always got my 430k per sec. The most I seem to be getting is 54k per sec and that is the max of a 512 line. So this is so confusing for me. Its end of month and I need to get my DLs done and now I cant. If anyone has any ideas as to what could be the prob please let me know....this is a cry for help :)

Okay, are you using a download manager of sorts to download and for instance, which sites are you having slow speeds with?

Take a look at this thread:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=91298

There's been some problems this week for some people.

If you are on the IS network, it seems today a few people had problems.

I also had a problem or two downloading on SAIX today, I'm also on 4mbps. My download manager of preference is either Orbit or Internet Download Manager, try them both ;)

Well, Im using International news servers..newshosting to be exact....never had any problems before....just a coupel of days ago that my line went all slow and wonky. Im using the standard port 119. Have had the same 54k per sec on Saix and IS thats why im confused. IS i expected it..but SAIX ...its not normal. Like I said Im in EL and I think we connect through Cape Town and it seems that there are problems that side. My mate in PE on 4mb says hes had no probs. So I hope its not my line. Tired of logging faults with previous issues.

So I guess we wait and see patiently....which sucks....cause the month is almost over.

Thanks T...you are myadsl's very own yoda and a legend for it :)

I won't say I'm a legend lol. If people never helped me, I would not have helped others in the same way. But thanks for the vote of confidence. We've got a few members with excellent knowledge, one being Yotch, he's really good at figuring out the "details" of an adsl problem.

I'm just an average user with a PC tolerance problem, I don't know if it's my screen, but I hate reading lots of text on sites etc. it's just something which started lately though, oh well ;) :D :p

Thanks for the comments, however, my problem persists cross platform, I have an iMac, macbook pro, Dell and HP laptops, they all sync at 4mb, and download at no more than 50kb.

So annoying.

Have you tried another router yet? Ask a friend and test another router. I may be wrong with my assumptions, maybe Telkom or your ISP is limiting you, but I doubt it ;)

I have tried a telkom router, and now a netgear router. Same story.

I have tried SAOL and webafrica.... Yea, will phone them AGAIN today.. so sick of that hold song.

Running Tiger and XP

Damn, I kinda forgot about that, sorry for that silly post! You said the problem is cross platform.

That makes me think it is Telkom. Have you always had these speeds, or is it recently? ;)

Well for me its only been recent. Like since the weekend. Was getting top speeds before that. Thats what makes it so confusing. I feel like im on 512 line but Im connecting at 4096. Is it possible for Telkom to connect you at 4096 and limit you to 512?

Technically it is possible. For instance, you get ISP's who offer 384 uncapped products, which essentially limit you to 384, irrespective of your line ;)

look even if u have a 4meg line, ur adsl is not guaranteed. this means that there will be times when the synching will not be stable between ur adsl line at ur house and the exchange and when that happens they drop ur line speed to a much more stable speed eg: 512. maybe u just stay too far away from the exchange and 512 is the most stable speed u can get and therefore they put u on that speed.
