I'm curious to know what sort of latency to expect from an unshaped prepaid account from WebAfrica? I currently get around 700-900ms on my shaped TelkomInternet account. I'm on 4mb ADSL and I am seriously considering getting an unshaped account to play WoW on, though only if there is a decent decline in latency. Also, how much bandwidth does WoW use roughly? Like on a per-hour of play basis? Anyone have any vague idea? How much unshapedness would I need for a month of WoW?

I don't use telkom ever.

I can confirm that from an EU point of view, all SA players praise WebAfrica for thei pings... The swear that Webafrica is the best for WoW.

That I can only qoute from them I know Jase signed up for Webafrica, maby he can enlighten you

I get 300-600ms on Web Africa unshaped. (Had 235ms once :P)
I only use it when i PvP though.
Shaped for PVE (get 600-900ms on shaped).

WoW can chow a lot of bandwidth. But it depends on what you do.
I had a twink and i was sitting in Orgrimmar and Battlegrounds constantly.
This used a lot of bandwidth....about 10-20mb an hour.
But when you out in the wild questing it is a lot less.

300-600 ms here aswell on Webafrica (using the Verizon connection)
about 500-750 on Saix at night, and 600-750 during the day when Verizon sometimes are unplayable.

Well, that depends.

We play on the EU servers and the latency varies between 450-700 depending on the time of day and the backbone you are on (with WA you can switch between Verizon and SAIX). It used to be much better earlier in the year but its not great anymore, nobody knows why.

We tend to go through a gig of bandwidth in a week. This is with two concurrent connections and one vent. My brother plays most of the day and is on vent for about 50% of the time he is on. So, conservatively, you should bargain on about two gigs of unshaped for one person in a month. This excludes browsing and other downloads, as we have both a local and shaped account we use for these purposes.

Something interesting that I learned recently is that apparently latency is better on Macs. For some information on this have a look at comments posted on my blog at http://wowblog.co.za/?p=33

I cannot confirm the Mac latency theory since I don't have access to a Mac. If someone can perhaps verify this for us it would be interesting to see.

If you are playing WoW ... forget about shaped. Go unshaped right now.

Webafrica is your best bet as a ISP, you have the flexibility to switch between networks. (saix / verizon)

My latency is on average the following :

400 - 490 Ms on Webafrica via Verizon (unshaped)
750 - 900 Ms on Webafrica via Saix (unshaped)
380 - 450 Ms on IS fibre.

I hardly even bother with Saix anymore, its just getting worse and worse.

Depending on your class... it helps getting quartz as an addon to calculate your casting times vs latency and when to interrupt / stopcasting your spells.

EU, Twighlights Hammer

WA prepaid Unshaped: 300 - 600ms as stated above. WA also gives you the option to use Verizons backbone (As stated above as well).

Average data used from 7 - 11pm: 35mb (Thats 2 x WoW running and a bit of browsing on Thottbott and no vent / voice). Results will vary with raids / instances, although we did do two BG's last night (AB and AV) and used just under 30mb.

I'd agree with Cloud on the 2gigs a month.

Thanks for all the response :)
Looks like I am gonna go for a WebAfrica unshaped account then... How exactly would one go about switching between the backbones?

add ".v" to the end of yer username - this switches you over.

Damn didnt realise there was such a difference between verizon and saix - actually would have put money on saix being quicker, obviously verizon has their routing sorted...
im buying WA unshaped now...

Surv0

In my experience, SAIX is better in the day (up to bout 5pm-6pm), and Verizon is faster in the evening.

Just buy an unshaped account, 1GB prepaid to start with I guess. Its a multi realm account that can be used on either SAIX or Verizon.

thanks for that.. think i might migrate my account to WA :)
