HSDPA & Gaming Terrible compared to 3G ??

Hi Guys

Im a noobie here but need some help concerning my new HSDPA connection as I have now upgraded from 3g. I play a game called Guild Wars thats bandwidth requirements are very low, I used to have great performance when using 3G and hardly ever had any slow downs or disconections. After upgrading too HSDPA I am plagued by Disconnections and my connection becoming in-active. It also seems the speeds I am getting arent much faster than my old 3g connection. Ive actually started having thoughts of going back to 3g? I always have a signal strength of 3bars or higher?

Any ideas, anyone with similar issues ????

Thanks

I have the exact same problem, just with World of Warcraft. 3G is much better than HSDPA, no chance I will upgrade until these bugs are sorted out. My dad swopped his card in for a HSPDA and its terrible. I get between 500 and 800 lat with 3G, HSDPA 1500 + and most of the time the game just stops and continues as bursts of data come in. Totally messed up.

Well Im glad its not me going crazy ? Can anyone shed some light or give us a fix ??? Its really frustrating and I wouldnt really want to go BACK to 3G now ?

Like I said Im a n00b but when installing it sounded something like Hawwaai LOL I know that sounds funny Ill have to check when I get home ?

I have the same problems during peak call hours on Guildwars, what i do is i just set the card to use EDGE and then i have no problems.

can you use edge through vodacom ?
If you are in an area that has Vodacom EDGE coverage, and an EDGE-capable cellery phone or HSDPA data card, then yes you can.

mmmm I will have to try that. But what really confuses me is that I had no issues on 3G and now HSDPA is so troublesome? I live in the Broadacers area and the signal here is great !

The 3G gods must have heard my call because last night I had 3 hours of great game play no slow downs no disconnects and I was using Team Speak without an issue ??? What changed ?

I have the same problem... Upgrade = no more Guildies!!!! HELP!!!! My appetite for distruction and killing things has never been so bad... What was that about EDGE? Is that a setting in the Vodafone Mobile Connect software?

Again last night was terrible. 5 mins on and then click disconnect. Have to then unplug my card reboot and then I will only reconnect again ??? What is up, I feel rather hard done by, I pay my subs but get really really ****ty connection ? Getting a little frustrated now.

Thats sounds just like what it was as the uplink light was working but downlink was totally in-active. I am in the Dainfern Area hope that helps. Thanks again for the response.

Same problems last night cant even browse internet for more than 5 mins before is disconnects !!!!!!! Grrrrr

Voda3G thanks for your help mate my Weekend 3G + Gaming was great not one disconnect and the speeds were great !!!! Thanks.

On Friday I had a few SMS's coming through which seemed support related some of the txt I couldnt even read. Was that somehow related to the problem I was having.

Anyways just to say again thanks a lot it all seems like it working now.

3G and Gaming - How about No.

I felt it necessary to let everyone know the facts, since I have lost a lot of time and money through what can only be called a "3G Endeavour".

YOU CANNOT PLAY ANY GAMES ON 3G - AT ALL.

There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, the uplink and downlink of 3G constantly changes (test yours at http://netspeed.stanford.com), which means you will experience alot of lag, and alot of packet loss. GUILD WARS, is unplayable 95% of the time, World of Warcraft seems playable, but when you have a ping over 1000ms, realise that you wont go far in a "Raid" or "Battleground. FPS fan? 3G wont even get close to running a FPS. Using 3G in a house that is 50m away from a tower will not help you at all. Another thing, GPRS is not an option. EDGE is not an option. 3G with HSDPA is like playing on a 56k modem.

Lets talk about costs. For Guild Wars, you are looking at 2mb down+upload an hour, which equates to R4 an hour to play the game. If the average guy plays for an hour a day thats R120 a month. The Average guy plays about 2-4 hours of an MMO per day. World of warcraft uses 5mb an hour, that means R10 an hour to play the game. We're not even calculating costs like Timecards etc.

Now, realise this: You are paying a premium rate for 3G out of bundle, it lags, it's unpredictable, you're constantly getting kicked out of games. So now not only the price, but the frustration of 3G is getting you down. Learn from my mistakes, DONT GAME ON 3G, it's a waste of time and money - and it'll make you cry.

I have only personally tested 2 games with 3G (without HSPDA)

Counter Strike Source - games.saix.net - I get aroud 160 - 220 latency
- playable, like I was use to on dialup - worse than my ~28ms on DSL and you cannot logon to the ADSL Servers, they kick you if the lat goes above 200ms or something like that.

World of Warcraft is perfect on 3G (S.A terms atleast), I get around 500ms at night, and around max 1200ms during day. I havnt done large raids, however I have done BRD and Scholomance + Battlegrounds and they have been fine on 3G.

TelkomInternet get me around 700 - 950 usually on DSL Shaped. My WebAfrica account gets me between 300ms and 550ms
