Uncapped local ADSL – larger ISPs give their views

Until hosting is SA becomes less expensive, I don't get it. Most sites are hosted overseas. There is nothing in SA to download. Don't get me wrong. I think cheap local is great. It will drive the local Internet industry.

Hosting will become cheaper once local bandwidth becomes free. Also local bandwidth has other uses apart from downloading - businesses in particular would find it very useful.

Telkom currently charges around R 12-00 per GB for local bandwidth, and with low profit margins – especially on 1 GB ADSL services – SAIX reseller ISPs will soon run at a loss if they offer free uncapped local bandwidth.

Internet Solutions, who already offer customers 30 GB of local traffic ‘free’ with any standard ADSL account, did not give feedback by the time of publication.

If you ever needed proof of Telkom's profiteering, you have it right there.

30Gb local from Telkom = R360 wholesale/R450 retail.
30Gb local from IS = <R60 retail.

I disagree with you there - actually I'm not entirely sure of what you intended to post there.

Local Hosting will become less expensive when local fibre optic links and interconnect [peering] and international bandwidth prices decrease, and that will only happen when there is a substantial increase in competition with Telkodemonopolies & its Digicrap etc services.

They probably did, but the mail got stuck in their SMTP server :D:D:D

Neotel Involvement

Do the Larger ISP's still not get bandwidth from Neotel? I was under the impression that Neotel had connected the major ISPs.

Won't their connections offer cheaper local connections?

I hope this is possible and Telkom can be bypassed altogether one day, they don't deserve to be in business and I don't understand how they can be proudly South African. That should be stripped from them!

local is free but you have to pay for it after and before you reached your cap which is not subjected to local traffic which does count.

56kman only thing I think local will affect is gamming? otherwise Like you said all the popular websites are not in S.A!

Neotel is installing Fiber all over the country :D they are currently going down cape road [Port Elizabeth] and are soon come down second Ave [where I live] :D :D and they getting quite far!!

BTW If local ISP's are moaning that uncapped will mess up thier system's too bad... boo-hoo then they are just as guilty as Telkom!!

rofl, sad but true.

Asked whether they will offer uncapped local bandwidth, MWEB said that, “In terms of the ICASA regulations we're obliged to, so the answer is yes.”

So if it wasn't for ICASA, MWEB would still like to screw everyone :)

Ic -> Do you have any idea how much monay a company of say 40-50 people save if they can receive even just their email at R4/GB instead of R75/GB? Factor in even just a few local websites and VPN connections, and you can easily save several thousand rand every month.

Try looking at IS, or TENET's server..

they both host mirrors of most major FOSS projects.

Where? I'm not trying to be cocky or anything I just can't find the linux distro's on local networks?

Regards,

ftp.sun.ac.za
ftp.is.co.za
ftp.leg.uct.ac.za

they normally have a linux folder in the root folder

Thanks milomak and ToxicBunny.

I tried IS in the past and found they only had empty folders and I found the same problem on suns ftp. I'm looking for Ubuntu distros and repositories. I see some of the ftps have torrent files for distro ISO but seeing I already have the ISO and need local repositories it't not helping a lot.

ftp.leg.uct.ac.za is just insanely slow on my 4 meg line.

If anyone know of any other ftps or url I can try, please share.

PS. ToxicBunny: TENET's server, do you have a url or can you point me in the right direction?

ftp.up.ac.za

Thanks thats very helpful!

Seems that the ftp has a lot more Ubuntu content to over then the other already posted, and seeing I live in Pretoria I think I will get good download speeds. :D
