Total ADSL traffic on the IS network

Did he say what i think he said?? Wow, now why then do we suffer so much with the IS news server then??
 
Speaking to a Eurpopean ISP recently they informed me they do 3T a second on their network. Do the math and you will see that we are smallfry in SA.
 
They said that local P2P and newsgroup traffic was "small". Well obviously, since how many local p2p networks and sites are there? The few that I have found need logins (getting an invite is a bit of a problem), and the free ones out there require close to a 1:1 down:up ratio. And since the most of us pay the same price for local and international bandwidth, why not just use international? Once the local bandwidth issue is resolved (once it is completely free like is should be and used to be in 2005), we should see local p2p increase by a fairly enormous amount.

:confused: So is it or is it not? Contradiction...?
 
The local portion of the total (local and international) P2P traffic is insignificant is how I would read that.

He doesn't give any numbers, but my rough estimate of the percentage breakdown:

Browsing 30% (I assume this includes http downloads)
P2P (international) 21%
Generic IP 15% (TCP?)
E-Mail 9.5%
Generic UDP 7%
P2P (Local) 4.5%
Newsgroups 3.5%
Skype 3.5%
Streaming 2.5%
FTP 2%
Net Admin 1%
Default Service 0.5%

Yeah, I did some quick 'n dirty calculations, 326TB/month works out to around an average of 130MB/sec average. That's the equivalent of about 160 ordinary 8Mbit ADSL users downloading at once --- what a joke!!! And 8Mbit ADSL is itself already considered a joke in some countries. Even factoring in contention ratios 326TB/month still looks like a friggin embarrassingly pathetic joke. And the worst is the problem is totally unnecessary, as it's basically been deliberately engineered by a few individuals in the DoC.

What really worries me is that should it actually use a sizeable junk, what would the newsserver be useful for apart from downloading today's news.

Oh yeah I can't believe some people just need a little reminder about the dark continent we live in. :o
 
more info requires more capacity! and people want more...

Were you making a joke or are you not familiar with NNTP (Usenet), aka newsgroups? At least, I presumed that's what they're referring to? Man, that used to be *the* place to download large binary files (e.g. porn or pirated software) - I scarcely realised anyone still uses it. I gave up on SAn newsservers long ago, partly because they became less useful as other protocols took off, but partly because they were so poor at keeping up with all the posts (binaries were often posted in parts, so if the server missed even part 31 of 42 (say), then you were outta luck). You got some decent news progs, like Forte/Free Agent, that could automatically download and put together and UUDECODE the chunks.
