New ADSL solution launched

I still say well done to ISP's who come up with these inovative offerings. However, I also think that it is truly pathetic that we need these kind of services. Are there any ISP's in the rest of the world offering this kind of service? Is it necesary for ISP's in the rest of the world to offer these kins of services?

To hell with you Telkom!

I don't really see any advantage, here. They say they can tell me which website is local, and which website is international, so, how the freck can they justify charging me the same rate for each?

Hi Stoke

I think the main advantage of this new service is price. They offer 20 GB local for R 74-00 – way below cost (Telkom charges in the region of R 12-00 wholesale for local BW). It also makes it possible for the less tech-savvy user to easily move between local and international to save money – the first service where this is possible.

Also of value to note that their DSL384 service with a 3 GB cap and 20 GB local is cheaper than the ‘DSL384 service with a 3 GB cap’ service ONLY at other ISPs…

Unshaped not uncapped ;)

So yes it is actually shaped... :/

Hi RPM

Well then I would appreciate it if Cybersmart would stick to that line of marketing (price based) and not pretend to be offering an ADSL regulations compliant product offering.

I apologise, but, once the ISP's also warp the rules like teklom does, all hope is lost.

Only SA has these complicated solutions. How is the normal person on the street supposed to understand this when buying an ADSL account with an ISP.

I understand how you feel, I have uncapped unshaped but no p2p :( well for one I can say that games are 100% better when my ISP removed some of thier shaping

The ‘large capextender’, which costs R74 per month, has 20 GB of monthly local bandwidth usage.

This Is a start and I myself think this is a good deal for all the gamer's here in S.A :D for me it's perfect!! I play GW which takes about 2 - 8 MB's a hour and CSS/DODS/TF2 which I can switch to local for and save!!

Too bad I still have to get a Telkom line....

It's not a bad concept, but to have to switch manually between local and international...! And have to reset your router or wait 2 minutes between switching! If it automatically used local for local sites, and international for non-local sites, then it would be a breakthrough. At least it's easier than manually switching accounts on your router, I suppose :-(

Agreed. Sigh

This new service is a welcome addition to the local ADSL landscape and sets a new standard for hybrid international-local ADSL account pricing. It is also a big leap forward towards a fully automated system where local and international bandwidth will automatically be routed and billed separately by ISPs.

A step in the right direction, but still a long way from removing the need for individual ADSL users, wishing to benefit from cheaper local bandwdith, splitting traffic at PC or router level.

Speed restraints, switching of IP addresses, 2 minute waits, p2p shaping - all make this a rather poor solution, compared to the benefits, convenience and savings that can be achieved by implementing one's own solution.

So nice try, but no cigar.

I really don't know what to say, this looks totally confusing.

In order to be in full compliance with the ADSL Regulations, which call for uncapped local bandwidth, additional local bandwidth usage after depleting both the allotted local and international bandwidth will be charged at R 20-00 per GB for DSL384 users and R 22-00 per GB for DSL512 subscribers.

What does that mean? Instead of capping you after your allotment, they bill you R22 per gig? If there is one thing worse than capping, it's not capping but charging per gig - nice when you get the latest mass mailing worm. What's with these Farnards thinking they can `the wool to be pulling over our eyes Klaus!'

So whats the problem with no P2P since they seemed to refer to local traffic throughout the article... local p2p anyone?

Someone earlier compared this with saix pricing... is this a saix account and can it be used with the news servers?
*edit* apparently yes

Is this only available to users who rent their line from cybersmart?
This new Capextender product – which is only available to Cybersmart one-price DSL384 and DSL512 subscribers – comes in three different flavours.
From their website all they say is:
You need to be an existing Cybersmart subscriber.
*edit* YES, IT'S ONLY AVAILABLE IF YOU RENT YOUR LINE FROM CYBERSMART AS WELL

And guys, please put a link to discuss the article at the bottom and not merely a nice little advert and link to the reseller?

Sorry, but i am in a bad mood after reading this confusing twak.

Agreed, but I DON'T apologise, it SUCKS BIG TIME AND CYBERSMART ARE LOOKING MORE LIKE TELKOM AFTER THIS MARKETING BULL.

Why bother with this? Go to gmail.google.com and use that site. Wait two minutes and then use www.mybroadband.co.za and then wait two minutes after that to be able to go to reader.google.com. My word...

no p2p, and its actually capped... waste of money!.

LOVE my Uncapped Account!.

Just been on the phone with them. Apparently if you have an existing ADSL subscription, you first need to open a 3gb account with them at R125/month, then activate the all in one bit at R169/month and then get the privelage of using the Capextender bit at R10/month. According to the consultant, the first month "is a bit more" but the saving in the long term balances it out...

It seems that p2p, wich is a legit protocol btw (irrespective of what people use it for), has become taboo...what a shame..

This offer is bloody confusing and full of loop-holes so they can do you in...
Why do I need to rent a line from them to make use of the service?

No thank you...

"the first month "is a bit more" but the saving in the long term balances it out"

I've heard that one before...

Or alternatively just get a local Openweb account...

OpenWeb Special Accounts
