I got a socket 754 motherboard and was fried by lightning this morning even it's plugged into a Belkin Lightning/surge protector panel(my dad's pc fried too, same problem).

Was looking around for something about R3000 which need to include CPU, motherboard, Ram and Graphics card (all my current ones are useless because 754 platform discontinued for some time already, and second hand is not reliable in my opinion.

My friend can get me the following for around 3k (from Rectron), that's AMD X2 4800 AM2, 1G DDR2 800, MSI K9A MB and 8500GT 512MB (don't know brand).

I haven't been following PC hardware after my last upgrade in early 2006 (A64 3000+, ASUS K8VSE DELUX, LEADTEK 6600GT), can our forum gurus tell me what you think of the above AM2 platform specs, my other friend had bad experiences with MSI motherboard (He swapped out 5 brand new PATA harddrive because of the MB), please warn me if this is not a good choice of board, and use NVIDIA card on ATI chipset boards? not good? Compatibility problems? I don't have plans to run two cards at the moment.
The PC will be for normal use/web browsing and offline FPS gaming, I don't play games on high resolutions and settings.

Please if you know any other places where I can get bargin buys and/or better setup for R3000, I would really appreciate your help.

As far as I know nothing can stop a direct lightning strike... Might be wrong, though...

Haven't had any problems with MSI motherboards myself. An NVIDIA card on an ATI motherboard shouldn't have any issues and those specs seem quite reasonable, but I'm sure supersunbird will be able to organise something better for roughly the same price :)

Thanks beanie! But I don't think it's a direct strike althought it's very close.....because my ipod nano which I was charging at the same room(my bedroom) with a different wall socket (without lightning protector) has no damage from the lightning.......but the cordless phone next room almost exploded according to my uncle........Could it be static or something which fried my board........

Is Mr. Supersunbird a dealer himself?

I don't think he's a dealer at Rectron, no. Why not PM him and ask whether he can help you out? :) I'll also have a look at what you can get for R3,000.

Done. You mean you also want to see what he will suggest for R3000 or you will also look around for R3000 setups for me?

Good setup for that price but the 8500GT is bad, realy bad..
if you can try go for a HD3850, or even a second hand 7600 until you can afford one.

also take a look at getting a Intel E2180, very nice processor & some cheap motherboards around.

If you mean Rectron the spawn of satan, then no, I'm not a dealer there.

But from checking it out, I'm sure you can manage 2GB of DDR2 800 with that amount, if you get a cheaper motherboard. Whats the price on that MSI? Or instead of the extra RAM a 8600GT. Check some of the prices at www.pcint.co.za, except for the motherbaord (they dont have decent cheap one).

I'm not in the business anymore except for family...

Thanks, looking at that place now, also recommended by beanie and it's quite close to my house;)

I am not sure at their graphics card section, they refer to as AGP but I don't think there's any 8 series AGP or are they? PCI-EX maybe?

I putted together a new list after consultation with beanie and suggestions from other forum members

AMD X2 4800 R946.2
Asus M2A-VM R697.89
1G DDR2 800 Hynix *2 R398
xfx 8600GT 512mb DDR2, R1197
Raidmax Sanoma ATX Chassis R258.62
TOTAL R3497.71 VAT INCL

Components from pcinternational and prophecy. Again I have to thank everyone who helped me, especially beanie!! Now I must study hard for my supplymentary exam on next Wednesday for my honours degree and get my new pc sorted after the exam.

Shot mate :)

Something came up from my research this morning, it seems this mb Asus M2A-VM had quite a few complains on its bios and intergrated GPU. And some other people suggest me to use E4500 which is better in performance than 4800+.
E4500 R979.26
ASUS P5KPL-VM R655
1G DDR2 800 Hynix *2 R398
xfx 8600GT 512mb DDR2, R1197
Raidmax Sanoma ATX Chassis R258.62

TOTAL R3487.88 VAT INCL

What I also noticed is these new mb only has 1 ata 133 and I currently have sony dvd writer, asus cd writer, western digital 160g and hitachi 60 gig. So cd writer and hitachi have to go.......and will get SATAII later

I currently have Creative SB live 5.1 card, should I just leave it and use the onboard sound? Becasue I also have a TV tuner card so 2 cards will take up all PCI slots. And my cheap cheap '5.1 surrond' speaker is analogue and I don't think there's enough ports on onboard sound for me to plug in the seperate channel ouputs.......

Any reason why you're not choosing Intel?

In his last post he just did ;)

Seems like a good setup cyberarmy. Remeber now, the PC International prices are WITHOUT VAT.

Where did you see an 8-series AGP card on their pricelist??

PC International list all thier graphics cards under the heading of "AGP Cards" or something like that.

I have noticed that, but is the RAM price exclude or include VAT, since they didn't mention under it....

I could not find any official model on XFX's chinese website for 8600GT with 512Mb DDR2, is it a special model?

Any idea on the soundcard issue I raised earlier? Is HD onboard chip better than CREATIVE LIVE 5.1?

Thanks!

Ja... Rectron will be cheaper on most things compared to PCInt.

Oops :o

Thought the last post was someone else making a recommendation.

But if the first spec is the 'best' my friend can do, let me rather source from somewhere else..
