I'm still very curious why there is such a spike in demand these past few days. Is this actually all the batteries charging after those sweet 12 hour JHB slots? xD

I would guess so, moving from 6 to 12 hours means double dipping batteries, everything from alarms, to gate motors, fences, phones etc all drainage doubled, and so, requires double the time to charge when power comes up

I doubt it. I can't see how its a significant number yet on a national scale. Certain suburbs yes but that doesn't matter much.

Also geysers, fridges, freezers, etc would suffer the same now that I think about it. Would make an interesting thesis, wonder if there is an inflection point where loadshedding starts causing even more loadshedding

Interesting. I think you may have a point there.

Also, this heavy load may cause a higher load on reticulation, causing even more issues, as the reticulation may not be capable of handling the load.
 
Warning for others in Jo'burg - City Power may be up to no good

Our water/elec acc. is identical to the last cent compared to last month, and still claims to be based on actual readings. Veeery unlikely.

Yes, batteries, geysers, people shifting their load. Imagine you normally eat and cook at 4pm for example but now you only come back at 6pm so you start cooking at 6.30pm with everyone else who start cooking at that time to make sure they have food before 8 and so on

Mine is different, though my power is prepaid my water is a bit more :(

They try that in Durban too.


Luckily we have a self-report email thingy for electricity so I fire that off once a month on the same date at roughly the same time. The readings I email them have reflected on my bill so far. Been doing it for almost a year.

I think we are past that point. LS has now become ineffective because people are busy adapting on a large scale. And the spike that now happens is doing more damage.

Ours are electronically read though, first problem since that started a couple of years back. Will monitor closely.

At least we now have a 25% rebate on solar to push more people to install solar instead, up to R15k

Loads of people would be jumping for it /s

I am going to go big battery and inverter with no solar panels. I do not feel like dealing with the solar police/registration. So I will invest and make the situation worse for Eskom. :)

Just get a noisy generator as well, for the times you'll need to charge the battery up when your substation popped its cherry....

Your neighbours will welcome the soothing purr of your generator.
