Nintendo Switch Game Recommendations?

After a lot of "uhm'ing and ah'ing" I pulled the trigger on a new OLED model...should arrive around Wed. First games will be Dead Cells, and maybe Ori. Seeing prices for BOTW and the like though...quite eye watering but I really want to play them as well. Metroid Dread also looks right up my alley, do I need to play any previous Metroid games before this one?

1st Welcome to the club.

2nd And no, no prior knowledge is needed to play either Metroid dread or Zelda BOTW. Would recommend Metroid Prime remaster as well. That one is a tad cheaper.

Edit: Sidenote, bought BOTW & Dread from Pwned games, they are cheaper than online

Great thanks! Will definitely put BOTW and Metroid on the watchlist then. Didn't know about that site...see the console is a few hundred bucks cheaper than TAL :X3: Oh well

Just note, they charge for delivery and extra if you pay by card so will probably work out the same if like R100 saving?
ie: don't buy 1 game at a time and yes they are trusted, have been operating for ages, and have physical stores, if you in CPT its even better to go in personally.

You don't need to play any previous Metroid games but I guess it would probably help if you were at least familiar with the lore and backstory of Metroid. But on the other hand, sure go in blind and have fun. It's a total blast. The only downside is you might be wrecked for the controls of any other 2d Metroid after that.

As for BOTW, I wouldn't even consider it to be optional. If you have a Switch you need to get it, it's as simple as that.

Yea I pretty much figured, been watching some videos and it looks fantastic, quite excited now.

The most controversial thing about BOTW is the weapon durability system - meaning weapons break regularly and once broken you need to switch to something else in your inventory. I never minded it too much because I always saw it as a survival type game, and it resulted in some great moments like when I made it through the snow area by using a single flame blade to keep warm.

The problem is not that weapons break its that great weapons break, and it breaks after X encounters. So you feel like saving the good stuff for when it really counts and that causes problems on "when" an encounter calls for a great weapon.... :)

Its easy enough to switch weapons to not care about the overall mechanic.

@AlphaJohn what about the Nintendo online sub thingy, worth it or nah?

Nintendo online (R 262) R21 p/m
For the online back-ups alone, I would say worth it.

Nintendo Online + Expansion (R 629) R52.65 p/m
For me, nope, I have all the games they offer and then some on my Pi as well as Anbernic.
If you don't have N64/NES/Sega games and wanna play them then sure.

You'd better get on BotW sooner rather than later, not much time to get through it before TotK.

Super Mario Odyssey is also a must at some point

Hehe, not in a rush. Between this and the PS5 I have more games than I can realistically play, so I doubt I'll even get to TotK before end of the year.

I'd also recommend Pikmin 3. Very different type of game but was really fun. You get attatched to those little buggers and get upset when any of them die

Here's the games that I'd list as must-buy on Switch:

BOTW
Mario Odyssey
Portal Companion
Mario Rabbids 2
Ori 1&2
Celeste
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
Luigi's Mansion 3
Hollow Knight
Metroid Dread
Metroid Prime Remastered
Mario 3d World+Bowsers Fury
Hades
MK8
SSB:U
Steamworld Dig 2
Tony Hawk Collection
TOTK (let's be real this is gonna be amazing)

MARVEL ULTIMATE ALLIANCE 3: The Black Order
Bayonetta 3
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Mario Kart

I suspect @prod is like me and has loads on other console/s and will mostly focus on Nintendo exclusives for his Switch? :p

Edit: Also forgot:
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Link’s Awakening <---- I loooved this game it forces you to slow down.
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker

Donkey Kong and Mario Kart are on the list abbreviated

I never played the other 2. I also have a decent gaming PC but I think if a game port on Switch is good enough then I'd rather play it on there, like Portal Companion

100%. Some games are so good that they deserve a second buy on the Switch though!

True we did get some games again on Switch ie:

Asterix & Obelix series <-- I blame my SO
Rayman Legends Definitive Edition <-- Her again.
Capcom Arcade collection 1 & 2
Diablo Prime Evil Collection
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 & 2

^ Seemed like a perfect fit for the form factor.
