The Workout and Fitness Thread

Yeah, I think I'm probably over thinking things. It was just a suprise to sit in the office and notice a 55 bpm and then I checked the historic data. If I recall correctly I used to be at 80 - 90 before. On the upside I don't think I've ever been this fit before.

If your resting heart rate is dropping from what it used to be it is usually a good sign.
Another good measurement is looking how quickly your heart recovers after exercise, typically a faster drop is indicative of being fitter.

As another said though, I have seen some guys with really high resting heart rates who are exceptionally fit, and some with low who are not.

Being sick can also change this, normally if my resting heart rate is higher than normal, around 10bpm higher, I know im getting sick or have over trained and take it easy. Oddly enough, when I was really really sick a few years ago, my liver and kidneys were packing up and I got covid at the same time, my heart rate was scary low, it wouldnt go above like 75 and sitting was in the low 40's. I felt like I was on a go slow.

I would like to buy a rowing machine, but the Concept 2 is a bit too pricy for me.

Is this a good rower? Or better to get a second hand HS Fitness?

One thing that has me concerned is that my resting heart rate is now down below 60 and around the 55 mark. This puts me in athlete territory according to bpm charts, and I'd hardly call myself an athlete. Not sure if I should be worried. (This is unless the Neo's readings are vastly inaccurate.)

My resting heart rate is between 48 and 52, I am over 50 and no athlete, but quite fit, training 5 to 6 times a week, running and strength.

What is more important is resting heart rate trends, how quickly heart rate drops after training and how average heart rate improves for the same or even more training effort over time.
That helps me measure (with how I am feeling in general) how my training and recovery, and general health is.

I think I might have underestimated the effect that a daily 12km ride would have on my fitness. Checked back on the Amazfit's data and my resting heart rate shows a steady drop from the time I got it in March and has stayed pretty much consistent in the 55-ish range since then. I'll definitely keep an eye on if my recovery rate improves, but as best I can tell I seem to recover quite quickly,

Today was super frustrating as we only had about 2 hours of power at work. I walked away my frustration and ended up doing over 11000 steps (normally around 6000) so I'm going to call that my exercise for today and skip the riding session tonight.

Got me curious how mine has improved.

The joys of data!

Now sub 60 is normal - you can see a steady decline from Jan!

Data is always interesting. I was really surprised by the sharp decline in mine.

Did a 66 min / 26km ride this morning. The extra 6 minutes was due to me waiting for the power to come back after load shedding. The sweatband next to the Neo seems to be really helping with the readings.

So after a week of bad sleep, I finally had an awesome night's rest and slept so well that I missed parkrun. But don't worry, I took to the streets later and had a good run by myself.

Back in my 20s when I still went to gym I also contemplated getting a rower. That does look like a good deal, although I have been out of the loop on that scene for 15 years now.

So when I bought the zwift hub it didn't even occur to me to worry about the number of gears on the cassette or anything. Not even in my frame of reference.
But it wasn't happy in many of the gears, only smooth in one or two, skipped shifts etc.
Then it hit me. If there's 11 on the cassette and my derailleur is a 12 gear, there's going to be alignment issues, duh!

So a zwift bit of googling later I found a sram 12 gear cassette compatible with the zwift hub and the rest of my (shimano) drive train. The actual shimano casette on my mtb wheel is like £150. No thanks! And it won't fit the zwift anyway because shimano is apparently the apple of bike kit. Custom everything. Nothing standard.

Just had a crash course in "holy **** there's nothing holding these bloody things together" but now I have 12 usable gears on the zwift. Will make free rides a lot more doable...

Welcome to the harsh reality that is post-9-speed bicycles.

Up to and including 9 speed you could chop and change and mix brands. You could even run MTB components on road bikes and vice versa as the gear spacing was standard - I did that and my dad still does.

Come 10 speed things changed, not only between road and MTB but between the OEMs (Sram, Shimano, Campagnola, etc). Technically you could still mix things but you need to set your derailleur limits to allow for a "ghost" gear where it skips either one gear or one shift. Never tried it, only read about it.

The next level of "OEM-ness" came with 12 speed. Since the freehub on the back only allows for the smallest cog (faster gear) to be 11 teeth a change was needed to allow smaller gears - natually the OEMs each went their own route and now you need an OEM compatible freehub to run whatever 12 speed cassette you are going with. To add insult to injury, Sunrace who used to make compatible non-OEM cassettes that worked on both Sram and Shimano now came out with it's own standard too on 12 speed.

That was a bastard.

Did a 63 min / 24km ride this morning. Upped the resistance one level. First 30 minutes was easy, so decided to Rambo it and do a full hour. At 50 min I could really feel it I my legs. Might regret it tomorrow morning...
