DA slams ANC for blocking Starlink launch in South Africa

I had to return a fake Chinese 16TB SSD drive early this year to Amazon.

The process was painless.
You log a return ticket on the website.

They supply your with the return labeling instructions you must print to past onto the package (or padded envelope in my case).

Then you inform the Courier team that the package is ready for pickup.
They collect it up and ship it to Amazon.

And once they receive the package the refund is issued to your bank account.

It was actually very simple. I expected a lot of hassles and it was actually simple at the end of the day.
I wonder if it would be that easy with a "service", as opposed to a piece of hardware?

I'm thinking of the contract, and the inherent cost of the equipment, but then I guess it's no different to an expensive TV or Laptop etc.

Some of you worry about problems you won't have, e.g. cost, WiFi backhaul, etc.

I'm curious as to what exactly the blockers are to have it available.

We honestly dont need it. With the amount of fibre connections being installed on our coasy do we want Musk's spacejunk monitoring all we do? Nope.
We don't do much anyways, we just complain, drink, braai, fight and contemplate emigration.

You are aware that 99%+ of fibre infrastructure traverse Chinese-made equipment, right?

Keep voting ANC for more of this brilliant logic.

Of course, keeping voters uneducated and uninformed is the only way the ANC can cling to power.

DA selling it like its a free service or even a cheap service, it is not

Clearly the DA does not understand BEE and cannot move with the times. I think the ANC should force all DA members and voters to attend a mandatory rehabilitation camp for at least 2 years.
Will there be snacks provided? If not i am not interested

To be honest, I stopped reading there actually as I realized that the rest would be similar. If the initial premise is wrong, then the rest is based on "wrong" too.

All political parties in this country (and possibly in the entire world if you read about other countries) are only working for themselves actually. It is really a case of choosing the least slimey ones on the ballot paper and not having obviously corrupt parties continuing to ruin everything for everyone.

They make it sound as if they have "their target audience" interest at heart, but that is only to get your vote and then it is just hot air from then on and maybe you might "benefit" from something they happen achieve - the so-called "crumbs" which falls off the table.

Not to bash the DA too much - they do seem to achieve more than the other crap with actual power, but when I think about the recent water crisis and how they handled that....

They scarred everyone to death with Day Zero. They spend a ton of money building desalination plants but ignored good science on where a suitable location would be to work long term and be safe. It was just done to be seen to do something. But it turned out to be a colossal waste of money.

Then there was the Schweizer Reineke (and similar) incident as well which put me off them.

I'm still scarred. :confused::(

This part I call muddying the waters:

"“If Starlink were available in South Africa, children in even the most rural of areas would have access to information and learning materials, and others would be able to educate themselves beyond the constraints of formal universities or schools which millions simply cannot afford.”"

I say this because it is trying spin an emotional argument with the implication that this will affect poor communities in rural South Africa. But if one considers the cost of obtaining the equipment plus the monthly fees which will be associated with it, it would be clear that this will not help the poor rural children as they will not be able to afford it in any case (excluding any potential sponsorship - but that would most likely only apply to very few "lucky" communities who obtains such sponsorship.

That said. The bloody ANC obviously is just looking to feed a cadre or 100 whilst doing f-all to add value.
It will help in terms of access and coverage. There's no need to invest in expensive broadband infrastructure, government can just pay for an existing service that provides the coverage. It's not in their best interests to educate the rural folk though...

Starlink is a real threat to the Mobile Operators and ISP's, and we all know who is also heavily entrenched..

Not really.

It cannot compete with fibre from a technology perspective. Once a house has fibre, it is the best internet connection you can get.

LTE is a mixed bag, but there are a lot of places that have absolutely cr@ppy options. That is where Starlink comes in. For filling the gap in smaller towns.

Where does the law state the ownership will be the ANC? It simplies says must have a local ownership per BEE rules.
They would also need to meet legal requirements like VAT in billing. Nothing new or unusual. Can't just let money leave and have nothing in the local economy. Rather kill local business even further.
