News server related queries

It was... kinda... back in those days.

Who would have believed that Telkom (SAIX) ran a free news server for decades....?
Ok, the saix one. There were a couple of free ones and some ISPs had their own too.

I haven't used free ones in years, they're way too slow. I'm using Newshosting which costs me like $4pm. I can get 200MB/s out of it on a really good day, compared to the like 2MB/s those free ones were limited to when I last tried them.

Can anyone in the thread who uses this archaic method of sailing the high seas convince me it is better than Private Torrents ?

News servers can be much faster than torrents, more anonymous, and you can usually find much more exclusive or hard to source content. But it usually means two subscriptions (one to the news server service and one to the Binary Tracker NZB aggregator). I would suggest trying it out for a couple of months to see if you like it. It's great for High Definition content.

I use block news as a backup.
On Black Friday and some other days they have specials

Planet and Eweka - full gigabit with massive retention, torrents have nothing on nzb's

Anyone keen to help me out with indexer access, happy to trade for Usenet server access.

Ninja is open for registration RIGHT NOW so I'd grab that if I was you.

Always blows my mind how old Ninja is. Iiirc it was a ZA based tracker back in the day when I joined MyBB and then morphed into an Indexer. Still goes by coza, do we know if locals still actually run it?

Though like all indexers they get cheaper on Black Friday so get a year and upgrade it to lifetime in November, probably the most reliable lifetime given the timespan I just mentioned. God....so....old.....need a damp cave to crawl into.......

FYI. Frugal's JHB server went live today. :)

Are you aware if Cool Ideas are hosting it, or if its like a client using their line to host it? Likely doesn't matter, but its got me curious if they're investing effort into hosting stuff like that.
