S. Africa Based Usenet Server Launch

The younger generations don't seem to mind. They will give their first born to the ai overlords in exchange for access to the systems.
I think they would move if the alternatives didnt have so much friction or barriers of entry. For usenet, have you seen the software out there these days to access the discussions? It might as well be 2005. Using on your phone...forget about it. Fwiw, the big 8 board has a list of some of the more still active groups. https://www.big-8.org/w/images/3/3e/Sample-newsrc.txt

Hasn’t that always been the case for Apple Pay?
No, it offloads the payment to your phone, the browser just needs to show a barcode to scan.

Aah that must have been added later.

It used to be a case of only working in Safari and only on an Apple device.

Been using it for a couple weeks now and I'm not impressed with the speeds.

I have to pump the connection count ridiculously high to extract the most of out it which isn't ideal. I was downloading now using both my Newshosting and Frugal news accounts and the Newshosting one (using the US server) was hitting 100MB/s with 45 connections but the Frugal one was only getting to about 30MB/s.

Even with both I still can't really max my 2.5Gbit line out (only maxes out when using the test download in SAB).

How come? I promise, we dont charge by the connection used. :)

A 2.5+ GBit connection is going to need threads to feed it (well, that and NVM drives) for sustained speeds.

I can get about 1.7 gig from it here on the east coast of the USA using 200 connections (should experiment with less I guess), which actually surprised me, just because of the distance.

Feel free to PM me or email

Is there a reason why such a high connection count is required compared to my other provider? I would think that because it was local I would require fewer connections to achieve the same speeds.

There are still quite a few using the text discussion groups like the "old days"....with the state of the internet and social media these days, it is probably the direction we should be heading. Anonymous, decentralized and no analytics being done to sell your behavior and habits to advertisers and big corps (I realize the irony of this while I reply here in a forum) but i cant help but think over these last few years, the type of discussion platform we all yearn for has been right under our noses this entire time but we use reddit and facebook and the like for convenience i guess. There are definitely some small hurdles to get over before usenet can be truly resurrected but i like to think they can be over come.

I remember using usenet for those discussions back in the late 90s, think I was on MWEB dial-up here and they had a usenet server. Many of the discussions were great, but one could also unexpectedly come across some really dodgy stuff if not careful, sometimes when I see someone complaining about a lack of moderation on a forum now I think back to those 'wild west' days! But if one was into a computer game, for example, there would probably be a group with the devs, journos etc all discussing things and there was a much more natural, unfiltered feel to it than these days with social media. As you say, perhaps there will be a swing back to that sort of thing.

I've been delving into nzbs with the Afrihost server recently (pros: included with regular internet plans, cons: low retention), but it's great to hear you're offering a local server. If I move into the longer-retention arena I will def give it a try.

ergo Backorifice / Cult of the Dead Cow?

Not sure, but it appears you are getting 100 MBs (err 130 MBs with both) with them so a far cry from 2.5 gigs anyways. Does Sab indicate any potential slow downs (wrench symbol, one of the little round arrows, let it self test). Is the system resource constrained in some way that makes extra connections detrimental to performance? I assumed you have some pretty beefy hardware running. High speed usenet downloads like that plus repair and unpack going on tends to find any possible issue real quick though.

Yes, those thoughts pop into my mind too. Would the internet of today be able to handle a discussion network like this without losing their collective mind.

Like the actual #shoutbox in irc where anything goes? No hurt feelings, no feels, nonsafe rooms. If it was too much you stopped yourself by yourself and exited. If you stayed... well you probably had good bantering.
