Former Vodacom chief risk officer Johan van Graan has proposed requiring biometric verification for SIM card registrations in South Africa.

Nonsense, if they want to stop SIM swap they need to stop employing criminals. A basic Polygraph test will stop a large percentage of criminals being employed all on its own. This drive to the 2030 agenda is getting tiring. I guarantee that using full biometric will not slow down, let alone stop illegal SIM swaps.
 
Van Graan explained that RICA made it very difficult for networks to verify that someone requesting a SIM swap was the legitimate owner of the cellphone number.

How and why does RICA make it difficult? If anything it means they should have ID + address to compare against? And if they wanted to, comparing the same against DHA.

Clearly it is. If the system cannot activate a sim without a dha confirmation that at least is 90% of the problem gone.
 
They already collect id numbers and proof of address for rica purposes, so why are they not comparing the id number on the id card/book (which btw has a photo of the person) to the information they have on their system before initiating a sim swap request?

When these rica/fica systems that store private information get compromised, it is the average citizen who have to suffer the consequences of having their private information published on the internet by some hacker.

Perhaps a more serious issue is with misuse of their systems which allow people to send one time pins to steal all your airtime etc. When you phone the call center AND by some miracle manage to speak to someone they tell you that they cannot help you... what utter nonsense.
 
In the interest of the public's security, we require the law abiding public to give up their rights, so we don't have to invest in keeping the public safe from criminals who have us over the barrel, because we have been, technically speaking, left behind.
 
Biometric verification didnt reduce the amount of fraudulent bank accounts from being opened. It will not reduce sim card fraud. The biggest issue isnt the public, it is within the network operators themselves.

It's the vendor's employees enabling the SIM swap noise. No amount of RICA/biometric/whatever garbage is going to fix that.
