The man who created South Africa's first Internet link has died

Alan Barrett, the man who created the co.za zone, died in Cape Town today following a diagnosis of late-stage cancer about a month ago.

Barrett’s passing was confirmed on behalf of his wife Kerry and the family by two of his former Internet governance colleagues, Andrew Alston and Remco van Mook.

RIP, never heard of him, but it sounds like he made a real contribution to society which is more than we'd ever say of most people

Alan was a giant of the industry upon whose shoulders much of the African internet ecosystem stands. He was a true friend, always willing to help and teach, and his loss is truly devastating.

He will be sorely missed by all those that knew him
