The seven experts chosen to review South Africa's next AI policy

Communications Minister Solly Malatsi personally contacted South African experts he wanted to lead the review of the upcoming draft national AI policy.

Benjamin Rosman, a University of the Witwatersrand professor and chair of the National AI Policy expert review panel, told MyBroadband the minister handpicked the committee's members.

Tbh, does not seem like a bad selection. But they aren't writing it, just vetting if I read it right? So who is drafting it?

Ai - I am not sure this is the right direction. The problem is the mechanics of AI is different from the social aspect of AI. Take the nuclear bomb for example - yes you need physicist to understand how it t works. But they are hardly the best people to understand the political, social and other impacts of destroying a city. Theory of the atom is far removed from the theory of mutually assured destruction.

Asking somebody know how a tractor works on what to do with the obsolete jobs seems a bit foolish.

This is pretty much what should've happened in the first place. But because of vested interests, they skipped this step or just on in some token people to "advise"

“Through our internal processes, we did not pick up issues with internal processes up until they were exposed.”
sounds like something a parasitic politician would say.

Good to see that they are also including specialists on the legal side. There should also be people on economics, labour and social impact. Possibly the Department will be consulting separately on these matters. Let's hope that they pick the correct people for these inputs this time round.
