DStv declared war on streaming pirates

Groupe Canal+–owned MultiChoice has said that combating piracy remains a key priority and that its approach will evolve as streaming piracy evolves.

The DStv owner has been cracking down on illegal IPTV services in recent years through its cybersecurity and software security company, Irdeto, in partnership with law enforcement agencies.

Looks like the finally decided on a fight they might be able to win to some extent, although IPTV will spring up as fast as they shut them down. I suppose being seen to have some success is a lot better than trying to tackle the traditional 'self-user' pirate which was a war they could never have won.

So not sure if I am morally okay with the pirate networks, but on the other hand it is the only competition Dstv has in the sports segment.

I guess part of the problem with sport is that the rights are sold for sky-high amounts which funds these sports. But there really should be some flexibility in the packages. Why can't you subscribe to everything but rugby for example? Or maybe there needs to be a entire change and you should pay rugby organisations directly and they stream it.

This is what these guys don't get. People who pirate are not going to suddenly sign up to DStv for R979 because their IPTV has been blocked. They would rather go without, so DStv get nothing more or less.

The dumb fscks actually need to tailor the packages and products to offer what people want at a far lower price than the one stop take it or leave it bundle at a high price.

Older management were seriously stubborn, these Canal+ guys seem to have more sense. But with company recovery in mind they're not going to change sports structures for years. This needs govt. intervention, heaven help us..

My Kyknet is still up. Supersport and Mnet is up and down.

Sounds like they've got their hidden ID coding working well, best get used to it.

But they won't stop the international competition or people finding inventive ways to use those services, and that should drive prices down.

Just split this?

They've actually used occasional wording that suggests they now don't mind, but can't actually give you permission. So why not..

It's certainly not illegal to share beyond household / family.

Thing is, people don't need to make use of DSTV streams, to get to watch what they want, specifically sport. A rugby game from a New Zealand channel, is still the same rugby game, just with their commentary. So DSTV can shut down their end, it still won't stop people from finding an alternative stream somewhere else.

DSTV only have themselves to blame for this, because it's 2026, and they still refuse to provide a sports only package
