The green ID book's end draws closer

Home Affairs minister Leon Schreiber has revealed that bank branches supporting the department's new digital partnership programme have processed 216,515 smart ID card applications in three months.

Schreiber announced the figure in a recent column for the Sunday Times, in which he outlined some of his department's major achievements since he became minister in July 2024.

I just hope we can keep alive daily and weekly news about saying goodbye to green ID books.
There's only so much loss a man can take.

I couldn’t give less than a **** about the green id book.

Why can’t we get biometric passports with the same urgency? South Africa is one of the few countries left yet don’t have it. If Zimbabwe and Lesotho have it, why can’t we

Have they stopped issuing green ID books yet? Can I get a smart ID from a bank without travelling 15km to another region? Lot's of talk, but the powers that be have been found lacking.
