Xbox Series X / S

FYI, check the comments:

I don't quite understand it. These consoles are already not selling very well, now they probably won't sell at all.. in 6-12 months, these things will be sold at half price just to get rid of them.

$800 for a series X or $899 for a PS5 Pro which is a much better piece of hardware plus the Sony exclusives.

Yeah, well, looking at the 3% profit margin Xbox had last earnings call I highly doubt they can afford sponsoring consoles.

End of the day you have to blame AI for this, hell look at Steam box. No one can escape the current market and its only gonna get worse.

no dude. increasing price === better sales === more people in your eco system.

This just tells me no eskdoos, ps or steam machine for me yet anyways although if any I would probably grab second hand ps5 pro / non disc - which is in fact no sale for any of them.

I do love how people are saying gaming is a luxury now, you've lived through the good times, but in the 90s and early 2000s, it wasn't cheap in consideration to your salary
This was the price of the SNES on launch
  • Console Price: $199 (equivalent to roughly $470 today when adjusted for inflation)
  • Game Prices: New SNES titles typically ranged from $49.99 to $60.00, though exceptionally large cartridge-based RPGs and specialized games occasionally pushed up to $80 or more due to the high cost of cartridge manufacturing.
Playstation 1 pricing

  • ¥39,800 (equivalent to ¥44,990 in 2024)
  • US$299 (equivalent to $630 in 2025)[9]

Dont just look at $ value... back in the 1980's R vs $ was a lot closer.

My Commodore 64 was about R600 back in 1982..... adjusted for inflation R15000
Sega Mega drive was R800 in 1990's.... adjusted for inflation R7500

As for SNES and such, never saw them in retail as Nintendo wasn't officially in SA. Core group currently sell their products.
Ironically, same goes for PlayStation, they not officially in SA. Originally was sold by SK and now Koodoo. At least agents now do retail.

These ****ers never where alive during tech boom, we literally upgraded once or twice a year... and it was not cheap back then already.

They are preparing us for the pricing of Project Helix...
Get the current gen pricing as high as possible by late next year to decrease the pricing gap - and then as they said they expected prices to double by late 2027? ---- READ: Project Helix pricing will be extreme.

And people think that the Steambox is expensive.... lol.

From some part cost estimates on YT, the full 48Gb Project Helix would cost over $1249-$1399 depending on the level of subsidy.

And what we see from MS now, seems like they're done trying to subsidize their consoles. They're in "Make money now" mode.

Playstation was in SA through Nu Metro and then Ster Kinekor, you're correct on the SNES, you could find them and gameboys at Endingman Games

I actually upgraded far more :-), mainly as I did PC repairs and upgrades for family and friends, one of the stipulations if you couldn't pay I'll take the equivalent hardware I was replacing.
Scored a few decent upgrades that way over the years, but PC upgrading wasn't cheap, RAM often went through the roof and HDD prices as well, those were components that were always hard to come by, only until about 2010 or so when it became easier and cheaper really.
