Hollywoodbets finally says the quiet part out loud

Hollywoodbets has side-stepped questions about whether it should be classified as an online casino despite putting up a billboard admitting it is one.

“Hollywoodbets: SA’s biggest online casino,” the billboard proclaims along the R21 as you approach the Pomona offramp near OR Tambo International Airport.

"Instead, they say patrons are betting on the outcomes of games rather than playing the games themselves, allowing bookmakers to offer these products without casino licences"

should be shot at dawn

I get annoyed when East Coast Radio takes every opportunity to promote the various gambling sites

Thats how the gambling boards approve casino games in SA. It's a loophole everyone is happy with.

Except the NGB, cos they aren't getting their cut it seems.
Yip, because some genius decided that these sites are licensed by each provinces board, and the ngb has fokol say.

The rules within each board as also very different, WC is very strict, each game needs to be checked and licensed, while most other board whitelist the software provider.

Yeah, its kinda funny watching the NGB wave its arms around, and the provincial boards go "meh, go away" basically.

The ngb was never in the picture years ago. Lots of bookies even use the WCP board as it has "lower" taxes than others.

Its the same with vehicle licensing, fees are set by the provincial not national.

SARS are also licking lips
Not really true as long as the company pays the resepective board and taxes.

I was referring to this but I will be honest I didn't really read through it properly

The Free Market Foundation has warned that the National Treasury’s proposal to impose an additional 20% tax on online gambling operators will overburden an already highly taxed industry.

ah ok but that would be double taxation. There is gambling tax which is against the punters/consumers that is paid over and then there is normal corporate/business tax. So adding a third now is a problem too.

Its merely a proposal of course, but it doesn't even vaguely resolve the vast majority of online gambling being offshore rather than local, so its punishing the local guys and giving the illegal operators a leg up in the market basically.

Wouldn't take a rocket scientist to see that it will drive the vaguely legal local operators out of business and push more to the illegal side of the equation.
