Ramaphosa applauds South Africa's startup space

President Cyril Ramaphosa has applauded South Africa for being a leader in the African startup space, following Cape Town's ranking as the third-best startup ecosystem on the continent.

Cape Town placed third after Cairo, which was the second-best, and Lagos, Nigeria, which achieved the top spot. In the overall global rankings, Cape Town ranked 114th.

These startups are typically on the default level 4 BEE status. The problem comes in when they grow over the revenue threshold and the compliance starts to become important. Someone I know has split his company into two distinct companies to deal with this problem.

The Cape may be one of the better places on the continent to for a startup, but is not one of the better places to grow it.
