It's box office gross, so total tickets X average ticket cost. It's a total revenue figure, theatres and international distributors would take a cut before the Studio sees that money.
I think you’d generally take movie budget plus marketing then x 3 to give you what the movie gross need to be before breakeven.

Also after the movie is off the circuit there is still income from merchandising, releasing on Blu-ray, tv etc…

Some movies takes years to break even.

Yup. lots of movies have had a new lease of life after not registering at the box office for whatever reason.
 
Not a fan of Nolan movies but i'll watch anyway and hope it's half decent for the most part. Surely this won't be as stupid or as 😴 as his previous movies?
