The Rugby Thread - Part Deux

Amazing how we've barely noticed a potential crisis at tighthead prop.

We've lost 4 front line tightheads in the last calendar year or so... Trevor Nyakane, Frans Malherbe, both struggling to recover from injury. Vincent Koch, out of form, out of favour, Asenathi banned...

Our 4 replacements are not too shabby, Thomas du Toit, Wilco Louw, Zach Porthen, Carlu Sadie... Neethling Fouche perhaps a bit unlucky but also waiting in the wings...
We haven't missed them because Du Toit and Louw are much better tightheads compared to Nyakane, Koch and Asenati.

I feel like playing Moyo and Williams is a waste of caps. The chances of them making the World Cup squad is basically zero. Far too young. That's just my opinion but Rassie knows best.
If you're good enough you're old enough.

You'll see Noah Calouri (19) and Henry Pollock (21) at the 2027 RWC. Guaranteed.

Pollard is a shoe-in for 2027 unless injured but pushing 33, injuries are sadly not far away. Sacha also very injury prone. All things being equal it would be Manie, Sacha and Handre at the 2027 RWC. One of those injured, what you going to do? You could use Damien Willemse at 10 but then you're exposed at 15 and we don't have depth at 15...

Rassie is investing heavily in Moyo, most likely not for 2027 but definitely 2031...

Not selecting them (Jaco, Moyo) would be wasting a golden opportunity to blood young talent. Wales is as about as soft touch as you going to get in an international fixture.

Anyway, after Saturday maybe you'll have changed your mind...

Good team, couple names I don't know (3, 14, 16) and I didn't like 6 this past game but should be, hopefully, more than enough for the Welsh
6 - Paul de Villiers? He had a decent game, bit harsh.

Rather diminutive 6, much in the Heinrich Brussow mold. Good jackler, good hands, quick around the park, punches way above his weight.

Check their stats, Brussow and Paul, I bet they're a very similar height and weight...

Brussouw was a pitbull, lol. Nah I just didn't like the way he played defensively on Saturday, was always out of position and very ineffective and some of his tackles could have very easily been penalised.

Was very effective in slowing down Scotlands ruck ball. They scored their last two tries whilst he was off the field.Hence him coming back on in the last 5 minutes!!

3 - Carlu Sadie... been around the block, represented just about every SA franchise (2014-2023) and currently plays for Bordeaux Begles (63 caps). If he's good enough to play Top 14, he's good enough to play for the Boks. He suffered a potentially career ending/life ending injury playing a club game for Bordeaux. He was apparently 2mm away from death, similar injury to the one that ended Kitshoff's career. He had major surgery to repair the damage to his neck. The club was behind him 110% throughout and he is now an integral cog in their formidable machine. 1.82m and 136kg so he's not small...

14 - Jaco Williams, young gun, part of last years world champion U20 side. Glenwood old boy, 1.75m and 73kg. Big opportunity for him. He's played a handful of games for the Sharks and impressed immensely.

16 - Andre-Hugo Venter... He's pomping Rassie's daughter. His father is Bok legend Andre Venter. I think he's a Grey College old boy. Regular starter for the Stormers. 1.87m and 106kg, 24 years old, so a player who is likely to be around for a while. Tough as teak, hard and direct (that's what Rassie's daughter said), super abrasive, just like his old man... Malcolm is out and out No.1, Bongi when fit No.2, very little between Grobbelaar and Andre-hugo for 3rd spot...

He's 2 caps in, still very green. Let's see how he is 15-20 caps deep, playing in a loose trio he met more than 24 hours ago. Cohesion and familiarity takes time to develop. He was drafted into the England fixture literally on the morning of the game. How's those circumstances for making your international debut? And he had a good game too. Was not over awed by the occasion, manned up and put on a performance, which is remarkable given the circumstances.

I'm not sure about illegal tackling technique but he's a jackler so bound to get pinged at the breakdowns, although pundits were wondering how he wasn't awarded jackal penalties against England.

Paul is pitbull 2.0...
