The Rugby Thread - Part Deux

That was a proper gutsy performance, especially the second half. Everyone stood up to do their bit and, red card aside, discipline was really good.

Should be enough to silence the haters for a while (although the trolls are still in full voice).

Before this France won 14 out of their last 15 games against with the only loss coming to the Boks, so glads the Boks backed it up. Under the pump for 60 minutes France didn't score even through the dominated most areas of the game. France were out on their feet and Boks looked liked they could go for another 20 minutes, remined me of the All Blacks of the early 2000's you always knew the last 10 minutes is all that matters and today we showed it.

If Lood did not drop his arm and shoulder it would not even have been a yellow card. So the red was justified.

How the hell does Sasha get man of the match? Absolute poor kicking, all his kicks was either too long or too short.
And then he missed a few penalties too. If it was Manie we would have had pages on this thread about the 1 or 2 that he missed.

Anyway great game, worth the late hours. And as usual we started looking great on attack when Manie came on.

Why is Manie's 2 charge downs just ignored? One of them saved by Sascha no less.

Manie is SO overrated. He's should be, and probably is, our 3rd choice 10 after Sascha and Pollard.

Well lets start first why you ignore Sasha's bad kicking, then we can get to Manie.
Also I want to watch the game again. I think that first charge down was due to a bad pass he received.

And also. I have nothing against Sasha, I am a Prooovince supporter. Just sometimes feel Manie gets a lot of hate and blame for things he does not deserve.

He missed 3 kicks from 8, which is rare and an exception. He also scored a great try which more than made up for that.

And I'm sorry but you cannot blame a charge down on a "bad pass". A good player will not desperately try and kick a ball, if he got a bad pass. He will take contact or look for the offload.

His timing is off, that's why he was charged down TWICE.

I have to agree here. That could have cost us the game. If they scored from one of those we might not have been able to wrestle back the advantage.

That said I'm just proud of the team. Damn I didn't think they will be able to make it after the straight red because that boosted the crowds and the French team.

Some players people love to hate Manie is one of them, just like Ruan Pienaar, Willie Le Roux and Cobus Reinach... Manie has been decent the last few years but people can't get past his poor goal kicking a few years back. He is probably our 3rd choice flyhalf but if you want to stay number 1 you need depth!

Maybe it was the time of the match but the tempo did pick up when Manie came on. The backline clicks when he is in command and his passes are the best.

SFM didn't have his best game but that is to his own ridiculously high standards. All of his kicking was sub par and the backline was underutilized. He needs a few of these pressure games. His try was superb.

What a great days rugby!! Thoroughly enjoyed it!!

Scotland v NZ game of the day for me... so close but no cigar...

Bok win was just so, so satisfying! To win it with 14 men for 40 minutes, to win it in France, to win it by a margin of 15 points... BRAVO!!

I don't read much social media etc...
Just thought someone on here has an informative answer.

So quick and random question, why hasn't FAF de Klerk been playing regularly this year?

Morné van den Berg was given an opportunity earlier this year, but FAF was kinda left out, anyways just thought maybe there's something "behind the scenes/ personal" I'm unaware of, or is it just that Cobus and Grant is keeping their top form going and performing at great levels.

From the little I have read, it seems this is because of Rassie's style of picking and building a team for the occasion. He seems to like playing different players in the different positions. He also seems to go with new and "uprising" talent. In some of the positions, we now have several players who are all equally talented to fit in and make a difference.

For Faf, and he is not the only one, it is possibly the fact that we have too many younger talented number scrum halves. It is a raw deal for Faf because I cannot see that he put a foot wrong or has lost his form.

Maybe the more astute commentators in this thread can add to this or over turn this.

Agree with what you say, and also Grant Williams is that kind of hybrid player who can assist in other positions if something unforseen happens in a match.

I think it's probably form and fitness related.

Faf's been out with a thigh injury in 2024 and more recently had surgery on a fractured thumb.

He's definitely still in the mix.

Having said that, Cobus is 35, Faf 34, both are touch and go for 2027.

Awesome win by the Boks on Saturday. Clinical and gritty. Showed composure to beat a strong French side with only 14 men, away from home and a hostile crowd. Deserved World Champs!!

I think Rassie is also trying to build a squad with players that can 'multi task' more so than individual single-purpose players. Guys like Kwagga, PSTD, Williams, SFM, Esterhuizen etc are all excellent players that can play multiple roles within the team. A lot has been said about the Boks squad depth and Rassie seemingly wants to have a distinct advantage with a very broad team selection that are really tough for others to predict.
