These data centres form part of an interesting pattern. I've seen this same scenario playing out across the US with the same talking points of massive electricity and water usage. So much so that they have started to plan them in small towns where the councils are easily bought and the residents are presented with a fait accompli.

Issues we have to deal with instead of discouraging investment. Remember those smelters that supplied our metal we have to export and import again? In any case it seems like these "protesters" are just making up things, things that cannot even have an impact. They probably cause more contamination throwing their cellphone batteries in the dustbin against municipal regulations than this centre will ever cause in its lifetime.

I don't think building and infrastructure is a bad thing, SA desperately needs massive fixed investment by companies since gov has no money to do so.

Generators cost R20/kWh. Solar farm uses 500 football fields. No grid capacity to built 500 football fields in the sticks.
