Spur steak for 50 cents

And my grandfather used to drive from the Vaal to CPT on R15 worth of petrol...

I don't even know why we bother calculating CPI/inflation ... because it's not close to accurate. They rearrange the buckets every year so that "oh look .. it's only like 3% (ON PAPER)" meanwhile in the real world it's 10%+ (easily). Then people get "inflation linked" increases (aka 3 to 5%) so everyone is moving backwards... but discovery hits you with a 10%+ increase yearly etc.

Geez this place's prices is just getting out of hand. R255 for a 300g cheddamelt steak?

We went for dinner last night at a local restaurant. My daughter had a 200g Fillet with chips and onion rings for R100
Spur 200g Fillet is R250

Inflation isn't the problem

If we had to go for inflation that steak would only be R28.
Even if we go for 1996 when it was R30

Apparently somewhere between late 80s/early 90s estimated around 93/94

“A South African could enjoy a 300g Cheddamelt steak from Spur for R0.50 in the 1970s. Now, the same steak goes for R254.90.”
The cheddamelt steak was 200g since the early 90’s. Didn’t know there was a 300g version.

Don’t recall it going to 300g in the 90’s. I worked in spur till 2001
I worked at one around 1996/1997 and the 300g was there, but as said it wasn't the default customers asked for it and paid a bit more.

Maybe the store had it added to their menus. The Cape Town ones didn’t have it.

There were spurs up in Joberg that had things like a carpet bag on it that we never had.
