Bad news about DStv and Woolworths in South Africa

Old Mutual has published its 2026 Savings & Investment Monitor report, which showed that South Africans continued to cut expenses by downgrading their TV streaming and shopping more cheaply.

Survey respondents also indicated that they continued to move to cheaper cellular and data plans, cut down on domestic help, and make cheaper living arrangements.

People often know what they should do, but rising living costs, unexpected expenses, and family responsibilities can make it difficult to follow through.

“We also see consumers adopting various coping strategies, such as switching to cheaper brands, downgrading services, or adjusting living arrangements,” he said.

“More concerning, however, is the rise in behaviours such as moving money between accounts to avoid paying debit orders or gambling in the hope of covering expenses and debts.”

In this situation people get tunnel vision 'cos they can't see any solution. But the gambling suggests they could've managed for another few months, so are being over-optimistic / egotistical. Nobody wins long term, seen a few take a bad dive with it.

Woolies works out cheaper. Maybe 30% more on fresh produce, but way better quality than most places. So rather spend more at Woolies than have to throw away stuff you bought at food lovers etc…

Woolies works out cheaper. Maybe 30% more on fresh produce, but way better quality than most places. So rather spend more at Woolies than have to throw away stuff you bought at food lovers etc…

Depends on the Food Lovers. Ours (across from Eastgate, Jo'burg) is great.

Last bought something from Woolies over a year ago (except maybe the odd snack).

Woolies can sometimes run specials that beat every other retailer, but like every other item is a few bucks more expensive.
