New rules and punishments for spam callers in South Africa

So you need to opt out of something you never opted into by giving all your details for this database. And then every month these spammers get access to this database to clean out their database.

Did the spammers come up with this process?
Yes, klomp stront.

They came up with it because they are making money from the spammers.

Government working for you.

Other key additions included requiring direct marketers to register on the opt-out registry and pay an initial registration fee of R2,574.

We should all be compensated for enduring the constant abuse from those marketers.

Except it's not always safe to opt out. My dad once clicked 'opt out' and they suddenly started charging him for some stupid thing he never signed up for, and he had to fight to get his money back and the debit cancelled!

I signed up on the old opt-out website, and had the same negative experience as some other forumites also reported. Some of the people who send the spam SMSs also send the legitimate SMSs, e.g. bank notifications. Having signed up for opt-out meant that I was also removed from the contact list for the legitimate messages, which caused problems. Maybe they were training people to not sign up.
I've also noticed that some of the spam comes from numbers that also message me legitimately.

Yup the ****ing Real Estate people drive me insane.

If it’s not a call then it’s a WhatsApp or worse still **** in my mailbox…which is why I no longer have one.

They also have this bizarre thing of rocking up on your birthday to give you a “gift” which is usually their shitty calendar and a Lindt ball.
Man... I just get the calendar. I want my Lindt ball... :sneaky:

I have registered on this opt out registry and I now receive more calls. Up to 10-15 a day!

Hasnt stop the Property agents from calling me 5x a day

Must be a Cape Town thing.
